영적 성장을 보여주는 신호 – 김인기 목사 (2026.07.31)

우리가 예수 믿고 하나님의 아들 딸이 되었다면 영적으로 성장해야 한다는 사실은 누구나 압니다. 그런 성장을 “예수님을 닮아 간다, 말씀대로 사는 모습이 보인다, 기도의 감각이 체험적으로 깊어졌다” 등으로 표현할 수 있습니다. 예수님을 닮아 간다는 말도 예수님을 닮았다는 증거를 어떤 기준으로 살펴야 하는지, 말씀대로 산다는 말도 삶의 기준을 어떤 말씀을 근거해서 어떻게 적용해야 하는지, 기도의 감각도 기도의 표현이나 기도의 응답이나 하나님의 마음이 관계에서 어떻게 나타나야 하는지, 그런 기준들을 잘 배워야 합니다.

여러가지 신앙생활의 모습들이 진짜인지 가짜인지, 말씀에 근거한 기준들을 잘 배워야 하는 이유는, 사람마다 “나름대로”의 기준이 있기 때문입니다. 어렸을 때부터 자라면서 집안에서 배운 선입견이나, 세상 살면서 주위 환경으로부터 배우고 습관이 된 편견이, 우리로 하여금 여러가지 성격적인 문제나 원망,짜증, 힘든 인생을 만드는 기준이라는 사실을, 예수 믿어야 깨닫게 됩니다. 우리가 말씀을 통해 배워야 하는 새로운 기준도, 없던 것을 새롭게 만든다는 의미라기 보다, 하나님께서 하나님의 형상으로 우리를 아름답게 만드신 원래 모습을 발견(Discover)하는 것 뿐입니다. 우리의 삶을 지배하고 있는 선입견, 편견 같은 변질된 삶의 기준들을 발견하고, 그 기준을 하나님께서 만드신 원래의 모습으로 회복하는 방향을 분별하는 것, 그리고 그런 분별을 공동체 안에서 연습하는 것이 교회 생활이 되어야 할 것입니다.

말씀과 기도 생활을 통해 성령님의 지배를 받는 기준과 분별과 연습이 교회 공동체 안에서 잘 된다면 그런 연습의 결과는 영적 성장의 신호요, 가시적으로 잘 보여집니다. 영적 성장을 보여주는 신호 몇가지 예를 든다면 이런 것들입니다.

1. 삶 가운데 명확한 신앙생활의 방향성이 보여집니다. 그 방향은 이미 가정교회에서 연습하고 있는 영혼구원이라는 명확한 방향입니다. 누군가를 섬기고 싶고, 예수님 모르는 분들에 대한 안타까운 마음이 자연스럽게 생깁니다. 영혼을 섬기는 과정 가운데 필연적으로 나타나는 희생과 오해와 손해가 일시적으로, 감정적으로 힘들 때도 있지만 영혼을 섬기려는 마음의 방향이 계속된다면 그 가운데 신비한 기쁨, 보람, 감사로 느껴지는 것, 그런 것이 영적으로 성장하고 있다는 증거입니다. 이런 가시적 성장의 신호는 본인도 알고 남도 압니다.
2. 뭔가 공동체의 필요를 채우고 싶어 하고 자연스런 헌신의 태도가 보여집니다. 그런 헌신이 깊어지고 다양한 사역에 드려질수록 즐거워지고, 더 헌신하고 싶은 마음으로 깊어진다면 영적으로 성장하고 있다는 신호입니다. 만일 시작은 스스로 자원해서 헌신했지만, 시간이 흐를수록 다른 사역자들과 비교하는 마음이 든다든지, 뭔가 열심히 했는데 억울한 태도가 보인다면 영적 성장을 방해받고 있다는 신호로 알아서 다시 처음 헌신의 자세로 돌아가는 모습을 기도와 말씀으로 회복해야 합니다. 하나님 나라의 사역은 끊임없이 하나님의 은혜에 근거한 즐거움으로만 가능하도록 영적성장의 신호를 잘 살펴야 할 것입니다.
3. 변화를 두려워하지 않는 도전 정신으로 사명을 잘 감당하고 싶어 합니다. 일단 자연인으로서 이런 모양 저런 모양으로 습관이 된 생각과 태도에 변화를 만드는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 더구나 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 삶의 방향, 생각, 태도로의 변화는 성령님의 도우심이 반드시 필요합니다. 그래서 비록 스스로 가진 생각과 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 삶의 태도가 부딪칠 때 말씀의 기준을 선택할 줄 아는 에너지는 도전 정신에서 나옵니다. 이런 변화를 체험하고 있다면 영적으로 성장하고 있다는 신호입니다.

성령님의 지배를 받는 성경적 기준과 영적 분별과 실제적 연습으로 가시적으로 보이는 영적 성장의 신호들을 잘 인식해서 더욱 풍성한 성장을 나도 알고 남도 아는 즐거운 신앙생활이 되기를 기도합니다.

Indicators of Spiritual Growth

Everyone who has placed their faith in Jesus and become a child of God understands that spiritual growth is essential. We often describe this growth by saying things like, “We are becoming more like Jesus,” “We are living according to God’s Word,” or “Our prayer life has become deeper through experience.” However, even these expressions require biblical standards. What does it truly mean to become like Jesus? By what evidence can we recognize Christlikeness? What does it mean to live according to God’s Word, and how should we apply Scripture to our daily lives? Likewise, how should a mature prayer life be expressed? How should answers to prayer and God’s heart be manifested in our relationships? We must learn these biblical standards carefully.

The reason we need to learn how to distinguish genuine spiritual life from counterfeit spirituality according to God’s Word is because everyone naturally develops their own standards. From childhood we acquire preconceived ideas from our families, and as we grow, the influences of our surroundings shape our biases and habits. It is only after coming to faith in Christ that we begin to recognize how these distorted standards often become the source of personality issues, resentment, frustration, and the hardships we experience in life.

The new standards we learn through Scripture are not really something entirely new. Rather, they help us rediscover the original beauty of how God created us in His image. Church life should be a place where we identify the distorted standards—our prejudices and misconceptions—that govern our lives, discern how to restore them to God’s original design, and practice living according to that restored standard together as a community.

When the standards, discernment, and practical training that come from living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit are faithfully cultivated through God’s Word and prayer within the church community, the results become visible. They serve as indicators of spiritual growth. Here are a few examples:

1. A clear spiritual direction becomes evident in one’s life. That direction is the clear focus that we practice in house church ministry: the salvation of souls. We naturally develop a desire to serve others and a compassionate heart for those who do not yet know Jesus. While serving people inevitably involves sacrifice, misunderstanding, and personal loss—which may at times be emotionally difficult—if the desire to care for souls continues to grow, it will increasingly be accompanied by an unexplainable joy, fulfillment, and gratitude. This is evidence of spiritual growth. Such visible signs of growth are recognized both by the individual and by those around them.
2. A natural desire to meet the needs of the church community develops through willing service.

As one’s commitment deepens and expands into various ministries, serving becomes increasingly joyful, and the desire to serve even more continues to grow. This is another sign of spiritual maturity.

However, if someone initially volunteered willingly but later begins comparing themselves with other workers or develops feelings of resentment because they believe their efforts have gone unnoticed or unappreciated, these are signs that spiritual growth is being hindered. At such times, we should return to our original attitude of joyful service by renewing ourselves through prayer and God’s Word. Ministry in God’s kingdom can only continue when it is sustained by the joy that flows from God’s grace. Therefore, we should continually examine these indicators of spiritual growth.

1. A willingness to embrace change in order to fulfill God’s calling becomes evident.**

As human beings, it is never easy to change ways of thinking and patterns of behavior that have become lifelong habits. Even more difficult is changing our thoughts and attitudes to align with what pleases God. Such transformation is only possible through the help of the Holy Spirit.

When our own opinions or desires conflict with God’s will, the strength to choose the standard of Scripture comes from a willingness to embrace the challenge of change. If you find yourself experiencing this kind of transformation, it is a clear indication that you are growing spiritually.

My prayer is that we will recognize these visible indicators of spiritual growth—growth that comes through biblical standards, spiritual discernment, and practical training under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. May we continue to grow abundantly in ways that are evident both to ourselves and to others, and may our walk of faith be filled with joy as we mature together in Christ.
