The Picture of a Shepherd and Shepherdess
The longer a church has been practicing House Church ministry, the more clearly it presents the following picture of a shepherd to its shepherds. We will also revise and supplement this picture to fit Namsong and share it together.
First, the picture of the House Church. Just as family members share meals and live their daily lives together, House Church meetings are also gatherings in the ordinary course of life as a spiritual family. As shepherds, we hold House Church meetings regularly. Just as a shopkeeper does not close the shop for the day even when there are few customers, shepherds open their homes with the heart of preparing a heavenly banquet, even if only one person gathers or even if only the shepherd and shepherdess are present as a couple. This is not simply about enduring, but about living out the blessed life of a shepherd, in which opening the House Church and preparing a feast day after day becomes as natural as eating daily meals.
Second, we need a clear picture of our roles as shepherds and shepherdesses and what we should prioritize and focus on. This is well summarized in the Shepherd’s Commitment. One of the most fundamental responsibilities is to set aside time for prayer while reading the Word at least four times a week in order to receive our own spiritual nourishment. Whether we read the Bible individually or follow the Bible-reading plan shared through the church’s online group, our souls will not wither only when we read the Word every day.
Furthermore, we must recognize that the highest priority in caring for our House Church members is interceding for them in prayer. We cannot solve the practical, real-life problems our members face, nor do we have the ability to do so. We simply pray in the name of Jesus, believing in God’s promise that when we pray, He will answer us immediately, as He has promised in His Word.
As we pray, God works, and we develop a spiritual anticipation of what God will do. Also, as we pray, God gives us wisdom. If something comes to mind that would allow us to help meet someone’s needs, even in a small way, we should promptly obey, serve that person, and then return to our place of prayer.
It is like praying, stepping out to serve, and then returning to prayer. As we repeat this process of praying, obeying when God gives us an idea, serving, and returning to prayer, the House Church members will surely recognize God’s work, and it will become a great source of strength for the shepherds who pray for them. In this way, shepherds will gradually be transformed into prayer warriors, and this seems to be one of the most important ways God grows His people through the process of serving as shepherds and shepherdesses.
In particular, I hope that the shepherds and shepherdesses at Namsong will gather together for Saturday early morning prayer meetings and pray for their House Church members. Saturday is a special prayer meeting for healing and restoration. On this day, we should invite House Church members who need prayer and pray together. As answers to prayer begin to ignite our passion for prayer, I hope we will reach the point where we can boldly invite people around us who need prayer, even those who do not believe, by saying, “Let’s come to our church and pray.”
Third, we need to have an earnest heart for those who do not believe and live a life in which we seek opportunities to meet VIPs. Many shepherds and shepherdesses seem to feel stressed about this aspect. I hope that this stress will become a healthy source of motivation. We can begin by praying that God will bring people to our House Church and church who will be saved. At the same time, let us pray for the House Church members or VIPs we need to meet during the week and naturally reach out to them by text or phone to ask how they are doing.
If possible, it is good to contact them on Monday. Rather than contacting them for work-related matters or to find out whether they will attend the House Church meeting, we should contact them simply to ask how they are doing. As we do this, opportunities to meet naturally will arise. Our goal should be to meet with others for a casual coffee or a light meal once or twice a week. Then, during House Church meetings or Zone meetings, when we set aside time to pray for VIPs, we can share updates and stories about the VIPs we met or contacted during the previous week, as well as the VIPs we plan to try to meet during the coming week, and pray for them.
As we continue doing this, our list of new VIPs will grow, and shepherds and shepherdesses will naturally begin to pay attention to new VIPs whom God brings into their lives. If several years have passed and there are no new people whom we consider VIPs, and we remain focused only on people we have known for a long time, we should pray earnestly with a renewed heart, asking God to bring new VIPs into our lives.
If having many people in a House Church or seeing many people come to salvation was the model for shepherds in the early days of the House Church movement, the model for House Churches today is a shepherd who holds meetings as a natural part of daily life, even when only one person comes, and who prays for the House Church members. Furthermore, participants in Lay Shepherd Seminars say that they are even more challenged by shepherds and shepherdesses who steadfastly pursue spiritual reproduction in their daily lives: they plan and pray to meet VIPs once or twice a week and make the effort to meet them when an opportunity arises.
Even if Namsong’s House Churches have not yet reached a stage where they are active and regularly experiencing people coming to salvation, our shepherds and shepherdesses themselves can still aim to live the kind of life described above. If we clearly envision this way of life and continue to live it consistently, the very act of preparing a spiritual feast every day will be a blessing in itself. Just as a farmer’s hard work and sweat in the spring and summer will surely bear fruit in the fall harvest, God will bring forth fruit.
In the future, when people attend Lay Shepherd Seminars or Pastors’ Seminars, if it is clear that the shepherds and shepherdesses are living precisely this kind of life regardless of the circumstances of their House Churches, those shepherds and shepherdesses will provide the greatest challenge and inspiration to the visitors, regardless of how many people gather in their House Churches. My hope is that, as we live as shepherds and shepherdesses at Namsong, this picture will guide us in examining our lives and setting our goals, becoming a concrete guide for the daily steps of our walk of faith.
