The Battle We Must Fight for Evangelism

Evangelism is often compared to a battle. As the word “battle” suggests, leading one soul to believe in Jesus is a fierce struggle. Evangelism does not happen by chance or through casual efforts; it is the result of an intense spiritual battle. Since evangelism is a spiritual battle, we must expect a fierce struggle. If we try to evangelize casually, we cannot win the spiritual battle and may instead suffer a complete defeat. In order to fight a fierce battle, we need to understand what the battle is about. For evangelism to take place, we must be prepared to fight at least two fierce battles.

First, the battle of prayer. Satan does everything he can to prevent a person from believing in Jesus, receiving life, and going to heaven. When we understand that we are engaged in an intense spiritual battle against Satan, who does not want to let go of that soul, many things happen that are difficult to understand. Therefore, we must understand that evangelism is a spiritual battle taking place in the unseen spiritual world. The weapon in spiritual warfare is prayer. We must take our VIPs to heart and engage in a fierce battle of prayer through committed prayer, early morning prayer, and fasting prayer. Since evangelism is a spiritual battle, we cannot lead a soul to Jesus without an intense battle of prayer. If we try to evangelize without prayer, we may work very hard but bear no fruit. As a result, we eventually become exhausted, fall down, and give up. Prayer is like dropping bombs from airplanes and firing artillery from tanks during a battle. Therefore, if we are going to evangelize, we must be prepared to fight a fierce battle of prayer, and in order to lead one soul to Jesus, we must first win the battle of prayer.

Second, the battle within ourselves. Evangelism cannot be accomplished through prayer alone. Just as ground troops move in to conquer after an aerial bombardment, evangelism requires actively engaging with and struggling alongside one soul. We need to approach our VIPs with active service, giving them careful attention according to their needs and circumstances. Even when we are busy with our own lives and going through difficult circumstances, when we make an effort to serve them, accept inconvenience, and make sacrifices, VIPs can feel and experience our genuine love for them and be moved by it. Being moved does not come from something great, but from thoughtful attention and sacrifice. When VIPs receive this kind of service that moves their hearts, their hearts begin to open.

However, even when we serve with our best efforts and sincere hearts, there are many cases in which people do not respond easily, and our love may even be rejected. As a result, we may be hurt, our pride may be wounded, and we may feel disappointed and discouraged. When we become caught up in such emotions, we may think, “Do I really have to keep doing this?” or “Haven’t I done enough already?” and we may be tempted to give up.

We must be able to persevere by fighting against our own emotions without becoming disappointed in people or becoming impatient with them. In order to evangelize to one person, there must be active acts of service, and at the same time, we must be able to confront our own inner selves and fight a fierce battle within ourselves.
