이번 주 칼럼은 『목자의 삶』 (김명국 편저) p.310-311에 수록된 “하나님의 자녀가 되어야 할 분을 찾는 법 – 최영기 목사”에서 발췌한 것입니다.

우리 교인들이 교회 생활의 행복을 맛보는 이유는 주님의 소원을 위하여 일하기 때문입니다. 모든 사람들이 구원 얻고(딤전 2:4), 회개하여 멸망에 이르지 않는 것이(벧후 3:9) 주님의 소원인데, 이를 위하여 일하기 때문에 행복을 상급으로 받은 것입니다. 전도를 하고 싶어도 대상을 만날 수가 없다고 말하는 사람들이 있습니다.

휴스턴 한인이 한정되어 있기 때문에 그렇게 느낄 수도 있습니다. 그러나 휴스턴 교회 숫자와 주일 출석 인원에 기초하여 산출해 보면, 주님께서 오늘 저녁에 재림하신다면 적어도 수천 명이 천국에 가지 못할 것입니다. 이런 분들을 발견하여 구원에 이르도록 하는 것이 우리의 사명입니다.

안 믿는 분들을 찾아도 만나지 못한다면 원인이 자신에게 있는 것이 아닌지 생각해 보아야 합니다. 전도는 구원과 상관된 것이라 하나님의 주권 영역에 속합니다. 하나님께서는 준비된 사람들에게만 구원받을 분들을 붙여 주십니다. 준비되지 않은 사람에게 맡겼다가는 구원은커녕 상처를 심어줄 수 있기 때문입니다. 그러므로 자신이 먼저 섬길 자세를 갖추어야 합니다. 그리고 하나님께 강하게 의지 표명을 해야 합니다. “하나님, 준비된 영혼을 만나게 해 주세요. 주님의 사랑으로 섬기겠습니다.”

영혼 구원의 열매를 맛보기 위하여서는 구체적으로 대상을 정해야 합니다. 이 목적을 갖고 목장 식구들이 모여서 휴스턴에 거주하는 다섯 분의 이름을 적어야 합니다. 이분들은 믿는 분일 수도 있고 안 믿는 분일 수도 있습니다. 목장 식구가 5명이라고 하면 이렇게 할 때에 1인 당 1명, 5개의 성명이 얻어질 것입니다. 다음에는 명단에 있는 5 명과 가까운 친지 5명이 이름을 적습니다. 하나 걸러 아는 분을 생각해 내는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문에 최대한의 추리력과 상상력을 동원해야 합니다. 이렇게 하면 목장 식구 1인당 25개의 성명이 확보됩니다. 이 25명의 명단을 훑어보면 보통은 하나님의 자녀가 되어야 할 분이 1명 정도는 있습니다.

이렇게 하여 수집된 5명의 명단을 갖고 목장 식구들이 같이 기도합니다. 흩어져서 기도하고, 모여서 기도합니다. 이러한 기도가 구원의 역사를 이룹니다. 새로이 예수님을 영접한 분들을 보면 그 뒤에 반드시 기도한 분들이 있습니다. 저는 새벽마다 하나님의 자녀가 되어야 할 분 약 100명의 명단을 앞에 놓고 기도합니다. 여기에는 새로이 등록한 분들과 교인들의 믿지 않는 배우자가 포함되어 있습니다. 각 목장에서도 이처럼 지속적으로 기도하면 영혼 구원의 열매가 있을 것입니다. 설혹 열매가 없다 할지라도 하나님께로부터 충성했다는 칭찬은 들을 것입니다.

How to Find Those Who Should Become Children of God

Our church members experience the joy of church life because they are serving for the fulfillment of the Lord’s desire. The Lord’s desire is that everyone be saved (1 Timothy 2:4) and that no one perish, but that all come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). We experience joy as our reward because we are working toward that purpose. Some people say that they want to evangelize but cannot find anyone to share the gospel with.

Since the Korean community in Houston is limited, it may seem that way. However, based on the number of Korean churches in Houston and their average Sunday attendance, if the Lord were to return this evening, at least several thousand people would not enter heaven. Our mission is to find these people and lead them to salvation.

If you look for unbelievers but cannot find any, you should ask yourself whether the reason might lie within you. Evangelism is directly related to salvation and therefore belongs to the realm of God’s sovereignty. God entrusts those whom He has prepared for salvation only to people who are prepared. If He were to entrust them to someone who is not prepared, they could be wounded instead of being led to salvation. Therefore, we must first prepare ourselves with the attitude of a servant. Then we should make our desire known to God with conviction:

“God, please lead me to someone whose heart You have prepared. I will serve that person with Your love.”

To experience the fruit of winning souls, we must identify specific people. With this purpose, the members of a House Church should gather together and write down the names of five people who live in Houston. These people may be believers or unbelievers. If there are five members in the House Church, each person contributes one name, resulting in a list of five people.

Next, write down the names of five close relatives or friends connected to each person on the list. Since it is not easy to think of people who are one step removed, use your best reasoning and imagination. By doing this, each House Church member will have a list of twenty-five names. As you go through those twenty-five names, you will usually find at least one person who should become a child of God.

With the resulting list of five people, the members of the House Church pray together. They pray individually and they pray together. Such prayers bring about the work of salvation. Whenever someone receives Jesus Christ as Savior, there are always people who have been praying for that person behind the scenes.

Every morning at dawn, I place before me a list of about one hundred people who need to become children of God and pray for them. This list includes newly registered attendees as well as the unbelieving spouses of our church members. If each House Church will continue to pray in this way, there will be fruit in the work of saving souls. Even if there seems to be no visible fruit, we will still receive the Lord’s commendation for having been faithful.
