As we live our lives and carry out ministry, we often face limitations. In the face of such limitations, we become discouraged and disheartened. However, facing our limitations also becomes an opportunity to look at ourselves. It is before our limitations that we realize how weak we truly are. And we come to seek God. Therefore, in a sense, feeling our limitations is also a good thing.
The confessions of those who passed through places of discouragement, despair, and sorrow are recorded in the Psalms. As they went through such places, they came before God and sought Him. As we meditate on the Psalms, there are confessions that are repeated continually, and one of them is “God’s steadfast love.” The psalmists, who were discouraged and disheartened before their limitations, held on to God’s steadfast love and rose again.
There were times when I encountered limitations while serving in ministry. In many cases, they came because of my own inability and weakness. At times, they also came because of circumstances and people. People do not like my inability, weaknesses, mistakes, or failures. However, whenever I struggled with my inability and weaknesses, and passed through difficult times because of my mistakes and failures, God was always with me in His steadfast love. When I fell to the bottom, He held me with His hand and raised me up again. When I was in pain, He embraced me in His arms and comforted me. When I found myself in a place of discouragement, He gave me hope and strength through His comfort.
Therefore, when I encounter limitations, I no longer become discouraged or disheartened. That is because limitations have instead become the way through which I experience God’s love and grace. Before my limitations, I acknowledge my weakness. And I do not strive to overcome my limitations by my own strength. Instead, I remain before God, who always surrounds me with His steadfast love. Then I experience God enabling me to stand on my limitations and overcome them. This is the precious lesson I have learned while living before God and serving in ministry.
My limitations are not the end. My inability is not despair. Rather, my limitations are the way through which I experience God’s love and grace. To know the way of overcoming my limitations while living before God is indeed a great blessing. Whenever I encountered limitations caused by my own inability and weakness in ministry, God did not allow me to remain defeated by them but enabled me to overcome them. The reason I was able to continue my ministry to the end was God’s one-sided grace, for He never left me but held on to me with His steadfast love.
