본질에 집중해야 (『목자의 삶』- 김명국 편저) (2026.05.15)

이번주 칼럼은 『목자의 삶』 (김명국 편저) p.77-80에 수록된 “본질에 집중해야 – 김재정 목사”에서 발췌한 것입니다.

무엇이든 본질에 집중해야 합니다. 삶이나 사역에서 중요치 않은 것에 마음을 빼앗기지 않고 해야 하는 중요한 일에 집중하는 것이 필요합니다. 교회 사역이 복잡하지 않고 단순해야 합니다. 그래야 본질에 집중을 할 수가 있습니다. 교회가 본질에 집중하지 않으면 에너지가 분산 될 수가 있습니다. 교회가 너무 많은 일들을 하게 되면 본질이 흐려지게 될 수가 있습니다. 교회가 너무 많은 일을 시도 하려고 할 때에 잘못하면 아무것도 이루지 못할 수가 있습니다.

교회와 목장의 본질은 영혼 구원에 있습니다. 그래서 어떤 일을 할 때 에 영혼구원 하는 일에 직접적이나 간접적으로 필요한 일인지를 생각 하는 것입니다. 물론 특별한 경우에는 교회와 목장에서 영혼 구원과 직접 관계가 없는 사역을 할 수가 있습니다. 그러나 그러한 예외적인 일들이 많지 않아야 합니다. 영혼구원 하는 일과 직접적이나 간접적으로 필요하지 않는 일들이 늘어나게 되면 에너지가 분산 됩니다. 그리고 시간이 가면서 교회와 목장의 본질이 흐려지게 될 수가 있습니다.

교회와 목장에서 영혼구원 하는 일에 집중 하는 것입니다. 어떻게 하면 영혼구원 할 수 있을까를 위해 기도하고 생각하고 찾으면서 집중 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 할 때에 교회와 목장에서 영혼구원 할 수 있는 방법을 찾게 됩니다. 집중을 할 때에 열정이 생기고 길이 열리게 됩니다. 교회가 잘 되는 길이나 방법을 찾으려고 하지 않는 것입니다. 교회에 도움이 되는 프로그램들을 도입하려고 하지 않는 것이 좋습니다. 영혼 구원은 시간이 걸리고 어렵지만 좋은 사역이나 프로그램은 단기간에 성과가 있고 열매가 있습니다. 그러나 그렇게 하게 되면 영혼 구원에 마음이 멀어지게 될 수 있습니다.

영혼구원 하는 일을 오랫동안 지속적으로 하는 것은 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 많은 장애물과 어려움을 직면하게 됩니다. 가장 큰 어려움은 영혼구원이 쉽게 열매를 맺혀지지 않는데 있습니다. 영혼 구원은 장기적인 헌신이 필요한 일입니다. 영혼 구원이 잘 안될 때 쉬운 길과 타협의 길을 요구받습니다. 어려움을 겪으면서 꼭 영혼구원 하는 일에 집중해야 하는지 의문을 제기 하기도 합니다. 그리고 포기에 대한 압력을 받을 수도 있습니다. 그러한 때가 교회와 목장의 위기입니다.

그러나 영혼 구원이 더디게 진행이 되고 어려움을 만날 때 타협 하거나 포기하지 않는 것입니다. 그럴 때에 영혼 구원이 아닌 다른 길이나 방법을 찾으려고 하지 않는 것입니다. 도리어 교회와 목장이 붙들어야 할영혼 구원의 본질을 분명하게 붙잡는 것입니다. 계속해서 VIP를 찾고 섬기고 기도하는 일에 헌신하는 것입니다. 이것이 결국에 교회가 사는 길입니다. 목장 모임이 잘 안될 때가 있습니다.

그러나 모이는 사람이 없다고 모임을 쉬지 않는 것입니다. 목자 부부라도 정해진 목장 모임을 지키고 모이는 것입니다. 서로의 삶을 붙들어주고 서로를 위해 기도해 주는 영적 관계성에 충실하고 집중을 하는 것입니다. 그것이 목장이 사는 길입니다.

사역자가 먼저 본질을 놓치지 않고 집중을 하는 것입니다. 사역의 한계와 범위를 정해서 너무 많은 것을 시도해서 사역이 분산되지 않도록 하는 것입니다. 그럴 때 교회 사역이 영혼 구원에 집중이 되어 집니다.

쉽게 열매가 맺혀지지 않는 영혼구원하는 일을 오랜 기간 동안 지속적으로 해 나가는 것은 만만한 일이 아닙니다. 사역자는 어려워도 사명감으로 감당 할 수가 있지만 목자와 교회 식구들은 그렇지 않을 수가 있습니다. 목자들과 교회 식구들에게 지속적으로 영혼 구원에 대한 동기부여와 격려를 주는 것이 필요합니다.

또한 목자와 교회 식구들의 에너지가 분산되지 않도록 해 주어야 합니다. 너무 많은 사역에 매이지 않도록 배려해 주어야 합니다. 그래서 영혼 구원하는 본질을 놓치거나 포기하지 않도록 도와야 합니다. 교회와 목장의 본질인 영혼 구원하는 일에 충실하고 집중을 하는 것입니다. 본질을 놓치게 되면 시간이 지날수록 점점 어려워집니다.

잘 될 때만이 아니라 어려움이 있을 때도 그렇습니다. 본질을 지키기 위해서 때론 대가를 치루어야 할 때도 있습니다. 교회가 본질에 집중하고 충실 할 때에 교회는 교회다워 집니다.

“Focus on the Essentials”

Whatever we do, we must focus on the essentials. In life and ministry, it is important not to be distracted by things of lesser importance, but to stay focused on what truly matters. Church ministry should not be complicated, but simple. Only then can we focus on the essentials. When a church loses focus on its core purpose, its energy becomes scattered. If a church becomes involved in too many activities, its true purpose can become blurred. When a church tries to do too many things, it may end up accomplishing nothing well.

The essence of the church and the house church ministry is the salvation of souls. Therefore, whenever we do something, we should ask whether it is directly or indirectly necessary for saving souls. Of course, in special circumstances, churches and house churches may engage in ministries not directly related to soul-winning. However, such exceptions should not become frequent. As activities unrelated to the salvation of souls increase, energy becomes divided. Over time, the true essence of the church and house church ministry can gradually become unclear.

The church and house churches must remain focused on winning souls. We should pray, think, search, and devote ourselves to discovering how souls can be saved. When we focus in this way, we begin to find methods through which the church and house churches can effectively reach souls. Focus produces passion, and passion opens the way forward. We should not seek methods merely to make the church successful. It is also better not to rely on programs simply because they seem beneficial to the church. Soul-winning takes time and is difficult, while good programs and ministries often produce quick visible results. Yet relying on those things can slowly draw our hearts away from the salvation of souls.

Continuing the work of soul-winning faithfully over a long period of time is not easy. Many obstacles and difficulties arise. The greatest challenge is that the fruit of soul-winning does not appear quickly. Saving souls requires long-term commitment. When results seem slow, there is pressure to choose easier paths or compromise. In the midst of difficulties, people may even question whether focusing on soul-winning is truly necessary. Some may feel pressure to give up. Such moments become times of crisis for the church and house churches.

However, when soul-winning progresses slowly and difficulties come, we must not compromise or give up. At such times, we should not seek alternative paths or easier methods apart from soul-winning. Rather, we must hold even more firmly to the essential mission of saving souls that the church and house churches are called to embrace. We must continue devoting ourselves to finding VIPs, serving them, and praying for them. In the end, this is the path that gives life to the church. There are times when house church meetings do not go well.

Even when few people gather, the meetings should not be canceled. Even if only the shepherd and spouse attend, the house church meeting should continue as scheduled. We must remain faithful and focused on the spiritual relationships of supporting one another’s lives and praying for one another. This is the way a house church survives and thrives.

Ministry leaders must first remain focused without losing sight of the essentials. They should establish healthy boundaries and limits in ministry so that their efforts are not scattered by attempting too many things. When this happens, church ministry naturally becomes centered on the salvation of souls.

Persevering for many years in the difficult work of soul-winning, where results do not come easily, is not a simple task. Ministers may endure through a sense of calling, but shepherds and church members may not always feel the same way. Therefore, it is necessary to continually encourage and motivate shepherds and church members regarding the importance of soul-winning.

At the same time, care must be taken so that the energy of shepherds and church members is not scattered. They should not be burdened with too many ministries. In this way, they can be helped not to lose sight of or give up on the essential mission of saving souls. The church and house churches must remain faithful and focused on their true essence: the salvation of souls. Once the essentials are lost, things become increasingly difficult over time.

This is true not only during seasons of success, but also during times of hardship. In order to protect the essentials, there are times when a price must be paid. When a church remains focused on and faithful to its essential mission, the church truly becomes what the church is meant to be.
