미국에 살면서 제 삶 가운데 가장 깊이 배우고 실천하고, 생각과 행동의 변화를 가져오게 한 한 가지를 들라면 “기다림”입니다. 미국은 기다리면 됩니다. 미국에서는 어린 아이들이 사회생활을 접하며 처음 배우는 것이 줄서서 기다리는 것입니다. 미국이라는 나라는 하나님을 부정하는 인본주의에서 나온 방자함이 아니라 인간이 하나님의 창조물이라는 신앙심에서 나온 정신을 근거로 나라를 세웠기 때문에 “인간 존엄성”에 바탕을 둔 여유가 있습니다.

저는 “빨리빨리”의 문화권에 살다가 온 사람이어서 그런지 기다림이라는 교훈이 무척 값진 것으로 여겨집니다. 그렇지만 “빨리빨리”가 꼭 나쁘다는 것은 아닙니다. 내일을 기약하거나 느긋하게 살 수 없는 우리의 역사에서 나온 문화의 현상이기 때문입니다.

아름다운 문화를 받아 들이는데 있어서 중요한 것은 보이는 현상보다 그 정신(Spirit)을 붙잡는 것입니다. 그리고 현상이 나오게 된 정신을 나의 것으로 만들어야 합니다. 교회에서도 마찬가지입니다. 예배 형식, 회의 진행, 건물 건축 등도 중요하지만 그런 것으로 사랑하고 격려하고 따뜻한 영성을 만들어야 진짜입니다.

많은 사람들이 영성, 정신이 중요하다고 말은 하는데, 그런 영성, 정신이 자신의 삶이냐를 물으면 당황합니다. 교회이기 때문에 교회의 머리 되시는 예수님께서 좋아하시는 것(영혼 구원하여 제자 삼기)에 집중하고 있는가를 물어보면 여러분은 뭐라고 대답하시겠습니까? 남 이야기 말고, 내 자신의 정직한 간증이 있느냐는 것입니다.

섬김의 영성, 교회니까 영혼 구원하여 제자 삼아야 한다는 말을 하기는 쉽지만 정말 내가 그렇게 하는가?, 그렇게 하니까 내 인생에 뭐가 그렇게 좋던가? 하는 질문에 할 말이 있어야 합니다. 우리 교회는 그런 질문에 할 말이 있는 사람들이 많습니다. 그리고 그런 삶의 모습을 남과 나누는 간증을 좋아합니다. 우리 교회를 방문하시는 분들 중에 분위기가 참 좋다고 하십니다. 왜냐하면 보고 싶어 하던 교회 모습을 보았다는 것입니다. 그러나 자신은 그런 분위기를 만드는 삶을 살지 못한다고 고백합니다.

중요한 가치에 대해 많이 듣고 아는 것은 꼭 필요한 일입니다. 그러나 그 가치를 삶으로 살아내는 것이 더 중요합니다. 지금 저도 그런 가치가 중요하다고 글을 쓰는 것으로 끝나면 안될 일입니다. 그런 가치가 제 삶에 경험되고, 주위 관계 속에 나타나는 증거가 있을 때에 의미가 있는 것이지요.

우리 교회는 하나님 나라의 중요한 가치를 글로나 귀로 듣는 것뿐 아니라 눈으로 볼 수 있는 능력을 체험할 수 있어서 참 좋습니다. 혹이라도 이런 감각이 부족하다고 느끼시는 분이 있다면 일단 아주 좋은 환경 안에 있다는 것을 감사하시고 연습을 시작하시기 바랍니다. 하나님의 능력을 삶으로 간증하게 됩니다.

Characteristics of the Church: Power

If I were to name one thing that I have learned most deeply, practiced most consistently, and that has brought the greatest change to my thinking and behavior while living in America, it would be waiting.

In America, people wait. One of the first lessons children learn as they begin interacting in society is how to stand in line and wait their turn. The United States was not founded upon the arrogance of humanism that denies God, but upon a worldview shaped by the belief that human beings are God’s creation. As a result, there is a sense of ease and respect rooted in the dignity of every person.

Perhaps because I came from a culture characterized by “hurry, hurry,” the lesson of waiting has become especially valuable to me. However, that does not mean a culture of urgency is necessarily bad. It emerged from our nation’s history, where people often could not afford to take tomorrow for granted or live at a leisurely pace.

When adopting a beautiful culture, what matters is not merely the visible practices but the spirit behind them. We must embrace the spirit that produces those outward expressions and make it our own. The same is true in the church. Worship styles, meeting procedures, and church buildings are important, but what truly matters is whether they foster love, encouragement, and a warm spiritual atmosphere.

Many people say that spirituality and values are important, but when asked whether those values are actually being lived out in their own lives, they often hesitate. Since this is the church, if we ask whether we are truly focused on what pleases Jesus—the Head of the church—namely, making disciples through the salvation of souls, how would you answer? Not someone else’s story, but your own honest testimony.

It is easy to speak about a spirit of service and to say that the church should save souls and make disciples. But we should be able to answer questions such as: Am I really living this way? and What difference has it made in my life? In our church, many people have answers to those questions. We also enjoy hearing testimonies of how God is working through such lives.

Many visitors to our church comment on the warm and joyful atmosphere. They say it is because they have finally seen the kind of church they have long hoped to find. Yet many of them also confess that they themselves are not living the kind of life that creates such an atmosphere.

It is important to hear about and understand the values that truly matter. But it is even more important to live them out. If I merely write about these values and stop there, it accomplishes little. These values become meaningful only when they are experienced in my own life and evidenced in my relationships with others.

One of the great blessings of our church is that we do not merely hear about the values of God’s kingdom through words or teachings. We are able to witness them with our own eyes and experience God’s power firsthand. If anyone feels that this awareness is lacking, first be thankful that God has placed you in such a healthy environment, and then begin to practice these values. In time, you too will have a testimony of God’s power at work in your life.
