김준기 목사님을 소개합니다. (2025.03.23)

작년 2월부터 진행된 GFC 청빙 과정에 대한 자세한 내용은 12월 첫째 주 설교를 참고하시면 됩니다. 이후 교회의 후임을 위해 여러 가능성을 열어두고 목자님들께 몇몇 분들을 추천해 보았지만, 합리적인 이유로 반대 의견이 있었습니다. 저는 하나님의 뜻을 신뢰하며 기도하던 중 성품이 너무 좋은 이수원 목사님을 만났고, 8월부터 동사목사로 함께하게 되었습니다. 그러나 제 사역을 지켜보시다 11월 말에 본인은 영주권도 없고 체력적인 부담을 느끼신다며 사임의사를 밝혔습니다.

김준기 목사님과의 인연은 예상치 못한 방식으로 시작되었습니다. 몇 년 전 지역 모임을 함께 섬기다 한국으로 귀국한 서효창 목사님이 지난 11월 초 연락하셨습니다. 밴쿠버에서 4~5년간 이민자 가정교회에서 훈련받고 싶어 하는 분이 계신데 소개가 가능하겠느냐는 요청이었습니다. 우리 교회와 친구 목사님의 교회가 떠올랐고, 당시 우리 교회는 동사목사 체제였으며 친구 목사님의 교회에는 교육부서가 있어 적합하다고 생각했습니다. 하지만 그쪽 교회에서 결정이 지연되었고, 결국 우리 교회에서 함께 사역하는 것이 낫겠다고 판단이 되었습니다.

이수원 목사님의 사임으로 새로운 후임자를 찾는 과정에서 김준기 목사님이 떠올랐습니다. 다만, 담임 목사직이 단순한 직책이 아니라 하나님이 부르신 소명이어야 한다는 점에서 신중해야 했습니다. 그래서 우선 장기 이민 목회 의사가 있는지 1주일 기도해 보라고 제안했고, 이후 김 목사님께서 장기 이민 목회를 해 보겠다고 결정했습니다. 그런데 한 가지 개인적인 질문을 하시더군요. 제가 GFC로 간다는 소식을 들었고 그 와중에 자기는 어떤 선택을 해야 할지 모르겠다는 것입니다. 용기 있고 정직한 질문에서 투명한 분이라 담임 목사직을 제안할 수 있겠다는 확신이 들었습니다. 1주일 동안 우리 교회의 담임목사가 될지, 부사역자로 섬길지를 기도해 보시도록 했고, 다른 교회의 부사역자 자리도 열려 있다고 제안했습니다. 동시에 보더들과 논의한 결과, 이력서를 검토한 모든 분들이 “이민 목회와 담임 경험이 없더라도 함께 섬기며 도울 수 있다”며 전원 동의해 주셨습니다.

솔직히 저는 김준기 목사님의 실력이나 능력을 완전히 알지는 못합니다. 하지만 두 번의 설교를 통해 여러분도 함께 걸을 수 있는 분이라 확신했을 것 같습니다. 담임 목사는 재능과 실력보다 하나님께서 사용하시는 것이 더욱 중요하다고 믿습니다. 김준기 목사님은 마치 깨끗한 그릇과 같이 하나님께서 쓰시는 분으로 느껴집니다. 또한 김준기 목사님은 제 멘토이신 최영기 목사님과 연결되어 있으며, 제가 후임으로 가게 될 GFC의 유대호 목사님과도 깊은 친분이 있는 1호 여성지역 목자인 정옥희 목사님의 아들이십니다. 저는 이 모든 과정이 하나님의 인도하심이라고 믿습니다. 앞으로 성도님들과 함께 서로를 알아가며, 하나님 나라를 세워가는 귀한 여정을 함께 하기를 소망합니다. 우리 교회를 향한 하나님의 뜻을 신뢰하며, 서로를 존중하고 신뢰하며 나아갑시다.

Introducing Pastor Jun Kee Kim

The GFC pastoral search process began in February last year, and for more details, you can refer to the first Sunday sermon of December last year. After considering several candidates for our church’s next lead pastor, I consulted with the shepherds, but reasonable objections were raised. Trusting in God’s will, I continued to pray and eventually met Pastor Soowon Lee, a man of great character. He joined us as an associate pastor in August. However, after observing my ministry, he expressed in late November that he felt burdened due to his immigration status and concerns about his physical conditions, and he decided to resign.

My connection with Pastor Jun kee Kim began unexpectedly. In early November, I received a kakao talk message from Pastor Hyochang Seo, who had previously served in our local house church network before returning to Korea. He mentioned that there was someone interested in receiving training in an immigrant house church in Vancouver for four to five years and asked if I could introduce him to a church. I initially thought of our church and a friend’s church. Since we had an associate pastor system at the time and my friend’s church had an education department, I believed his church would be a better fit. However, as their decision was delayed, I ultimately decided it would be better for him to serve with us.

With Pastor Soowon Lee’s resignation, I began searching for a successor, and Pastor Jun kee Kim came to mind. However, being a lead pastor is not just a position—it is a divine calling. So, I first asked him to pray for a week about whether he was willing to commit to long-term immigrant ministry. After a week, he decided to take on the challenge. Then, he asked me a personal question. Having heard that I was moving to GFC, he was uncertain about what choice he should make. His honesty and courage in asking such a transparent question reassured me that he was someone who could be entrusted with the senior pastor role. I asked him to pray for another week about whether he should become our church’s lead pastor or serve as an assistant pastor. I also informed him that an associate pastor position was available. Meanwhile, after reviewing his resume, our board members unanimously agreed that even though he lacked experience in immigrant ministry and as a senior pastor, we could support and work together.

To be honest, I do not know the full extent of Pastor Kim’s skills or abilities. However, after listening to his two sermons, I believe you all may also feel reassured about walking this journey together with him. More than talent or competence, I believe the most important qualification for a senior pastor is being used by God. Pastor Jun kee Kim feels like a pure vessel that God has chosen to use.

Additionally, Pastor Jun kee Kim is connected to my mentor, Pastor Young Gui Chai, and he is the son of Pastor Okhee Jung, who was the first female regional shepherd in Korea and has a close relationship with Pastor Daeho Yoo, my predecessor at GFC. I believe that all of these events have unfolded under God’s guidance. As we move forward, I hope that we can get to know each other, build God’s kingdom together, and trust in the Lord’s plans for our church. Let us continue to respect and support one another as we walk this journey together.
