은혜와 소망에 관한 두 가지 이야기(2025.03.02)

니제이 굽타가 쓴 ‘신약 단어 수업’이란 책을 읽었습니다. 기독교 단어를 15개를 설명하는데 신학적으로 잘 정리되어 있습니다. 또한 자칫 추상적인 단어들을 가슴에 와 닿도록 좋은 사례도 있습니다. 그 중에 두 가지를 소개합니다.

은혜에 대한 이야기입니다. 2006년 찰스 로버츠는 아미시 학교 교실에서 다섯 명의 어린 소녀를 죽이고 경찰이 포위망을 좁혀오자 자살을 선택합니다. 로버츠에게는 세 명의 자식과 아내 ‘마리’가 있었습니다. 아미시 공동체는 남겨진 마리와 그의 자녀들을 위해 고통과 아픔에도 불구하고 로버츠를 용서하기로 결정합니다. 로버츠를 매장하던 날 아미시 공동체는 그 자리에 참석합니다. 평소 사진 찍히는 것을 좋아하지 않음에도 카메라 앞에 일부러 자리를 잡습니다. 마리와 그의 자녀들을 자신의 몸으로 가려서 그들의 존엄을 지켜주려 한 것입니다.

소망에 관한 이야기입니다. 의사로부터 치료 불가능한 감염으로 다리를 절단하고 의족을 달면 다시 걸을 수는 있다는 진단을 받은 세 사람이 있습니다. 의사의 진단은 정확했고 오진이 아닙니다. 첫 번째 환자는 겁을 먹고 문제가 사라지기를 소망하며 진단을 무시하기로 합니다. 결국 감염으로 사망하게 됩니다. 헛된 소망의 결과입니다. 두 번째 환자는 충격을 받아 스스로 목숨을 끊습니다. 수술이 끝나고 의족을 하더라도 여전히 삶은 놀라운 가치가 있다고 믿지 못한 것입니다. 자신의 기준에 맞지 않으면 아무 소망이 없다고 생각하는 사람입니다. 세 번째 환자는 진단을 듣고 괴로워합니다. 의족을 달고 걷는 자신의 모습을 상상하기 싫습니다. 하지만 냉정하게 감염이라는 현실을 직시합니다. 그리고 수술 후 삶을 준비하기 위해 매일 팔과 몸통 건강한 다리를 위해 운동으로 준비합니다. 다리 없이도 할 수 있는 의미 있는 일들을 미리 찾습니다. 성경이 말하는 진정한 소망을 가진 자입니다. 세상에서 잠시 불편함을 겪더라도 영원한 나라에서는 완전히 회복될 것을 소망하는 것입니다.

은혜를 누리는 사람은 용서와 사랑을 통해 다른 사람도 은혜를 누리도록 배려합니다. 소망을 가진 사람은 더욱 현실에 최선을 다할 힘이 생깁니다.

Two Stories About Grace and Hope

I read a book called New Testament Word Study by Nijay Gupta. This book explains 15 Christian words in a well-organized theological way. It also includes real-life examples that make these words feel more real and meaningful. Here, I want to share two stories from the book.

A Story About Grace. In 2006, Charles Roberts entered an Amish school classroom and killed five young girls. When the police surrounded him, he chose to end his own life. Roberts had a wife, Marie, and three children. Despite their pain and suffering, the Amish community decided to forgive him. On the day of his burial, members of the Amish community attended the funeral. Although they usually avoid being photographed, they stood in front of the cameras on purpose. They did this to protect Marie and her children’s dignity by covering them with their own bodies.

A Story About Hope. Three people were diagnosed with an untreatable infection. The doctors told them that their legs had to be amputated, but if they used prosthetic legs, they would be able to walk again. The diagnosis was accurate and not a mistake. The first patient was afraid and ignored the doctor’s advice, hoping the problem would go away. In the end, the infection spread, and he died. This is the result of false hope. The second patient was so shocked that he took his own life. He believed that even if he had surgery and got prosthetic legs, life would no longer be valuable. He thought that if things did not go as he expected, there was no hope at all. The third patient was also deeply troubled. He did not want to imagine himself walking with prosthetic legs. However, he faced reality and accepted his condition. He started preparing for life after the surgery by exercising his arms, body, and healthy leg. He also searched for meaningful activities he could do without legs. This person had true hope, as described in the Bible. Even if he faced difficulties in this world, he believed that in the eternal kingdom, he would be fully restored.

A person who receives grace shares it with others through forgiveness and love. A person who has hope gains the strength to do their best in reality.
