음치가 되지 맙시다. (2025.02.16)

눈치가 있는 분들은 여기서 말하는 음치가 단순히 노래를 잘 못하는 사람을 의미하지 않다는 것을 알 것입니다. 하나님 나라에 소속 되었다면서도 예수님이 아닌 자기가 주인공이 되려는 미성숙한 신앙인이 음치입니다.

음치에게는 네 가지 특징이 있습니다. 첫째, 음치는 남의 소리를 제대로 듣지 못합니다. 상대방의 의도를 파악하지 못하고, 본래 의미를 이해하지 못해 소통이 어렵습니다. 둘째, 자기 소리만 크게 냅니다. 남의 소리를 들으려 하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 자기 소리를 상대가 못 듣는 것으로 착각하여 더욱 자기주장만 강하게 말합니다. 셋째, 자존심이 지나치게 강합니다. 자신의 실수를 깨달아도 인정하기를 싫어합니다. 마지막으로, 음치는 항상 성실합니다. 한 번도 빠짐없이 같은 실수를 반복하며, 자신이 음치인지조차 모른 채 살아갑니다.

공동체 안에서도 영적 음치들이 있습니다. 신앙의 연수가 쌓여도 여전히 자신의 생각이 중심이 되고, 자신의 기준이 옳다고 착각합니다. 상대의 의도에는 관심이 없고, 자기 목소리만 높이며, 자존심을 내세우고, 공동체의 분위기를 읽지 못합니다. 음치는 지휘자나 악기 연주자들에게도 관심이 없습니다. 그 위치에 서보지 못했기 때문에 자신만의 음악에만 심취합니다. 정해진 악보에 집중하지 않고 지휘자나 연주자가 틀렸다고 확신합니다. 성경보다 자기 생각이 우선이면서도 자신이 성경적이라고 착각합니다. 말씀에 항복해 본 경험이 없음에도 하나님의 뜻을 안다고 생각합니다. 예수님의 십자가로 구원받은 성도라면서 하나님의 나라와 뜻에 관심이 없다면 심각한 영적 음치입니다.

어떻게 영적 음치에서 벗어날 수 있을까요? 성경을 펴서 읽는 것입니다. 먼저 하나님 나라와 그의 의를 구하려면 알아야 합니다. 지휘자 되시는 예수님께서 성경을 통해 어떻게 나타나시는지 알아야 영적 음치는 치료됩니다. 주님의 지휘봉을 바라보고 악보를 참고하며 옆 사람의 소리를 경청하면 음치가 고쳐지기 시작합니다. 조화로운 하모니 속에서 자신을 발견하다 보면 어느덧 영적 음치를 벗어나 하나님께 영광 돌리는 인생이 되어 있습니다.

Let’s Not Be Spiritually Tone-Deaf

Some of you may have already guessed that being “tone-deaf” in this context is not just about singing off-key. A spiritually tone-deaf person is someone who claims to belong to God’s kingdom but still tries to make themselves the main character instead of Jesus.

There are four characteristics of a tone-deaf person. First, they do not listen well to others. They fail to understand the true meaning behind words and struggle with communication. Second, they only focus on their own voice. They don’t try to hear others and mistakenly think that they are not being heard, so they speak even louder. Third, they have excessive pride. Even when they realize their mistakes, they refuse to admit them. Lastly, they are very consistent—but in a bad way. They keep making the same mistakes over and over again without realizing they are tone-deaf.

Spiritually tone-deaf people also exist in Christian communities. No matter how long they have been believers, they continue to put their own thoughts at the center and believe that their way is always right. They have no interest in understanding others, they insist on their opinions, and they fail to sense the atmosphere of the community. A tone-deaf person also ignores the conductor and the musicians. Since they have never stood in that position, they only focus on their own music. They refuse to follow the sheet music, believing that the conductor or musicians must be wrong. They put their own thoughts above Scripture while still thinking they are being biblical. Even though they claim to be saved by Jesus’ sacrifice, they show little interest in God’s kingdom and His will. This is a serious case of spiritual tone-deafness.

How can we overcome spiritual tone-deafness? We must open the Bible and read it. To seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness, we first need to know what they are. We need to recognize how Jesus, our conductor, reveals Himself through Scripture. When we look to His guidance, follow His Word, and listen carefully to those around us, our tone-deafness begins to heal. As we experience the beauty of harmony, we will find ourselves transformed—living lives that glorify God.
