2주에 책 두 권을 읽고 토론하는 ‘책향’이라는 모임에서 목사로서 자신을 되돌아보자는 의미로 공유된 글입니다. 원래는 ‘담임 목사가 되기 전에 하는 일곱 가지 착각과 현실’이라는 제목이었지만, 어떤 분이 ChatGPT를 통해 몇 가지를 추가했고, 제가 겹치는 부분을 편집하여 아홉 가지로 정리했습니다.

1. 담임이 되면 교회가 엄청 부흥할 것이다. 현실: 대부분의 교회는 숫자적으로 마이너스이거나 현상 유지에 그친다. 그대가 섬기는 교회도 그들 중에 속한다.

2. 담임이 되면 탁월한 설교와 영성 깊은 목회를 할 것이다. 현실: 나보다 설교를 잘하고 영성이 깊은 고수들이 많다. 설교와 목회는 노력만으로 해결되지 않는다.

3. 담임이 되면 시스템과 행정을 획기적으로 바꿀 것이다. 현실: 교회는 재정을 비롯한 많은 부분에서 개인이 좌지우지할 수 없는 것이 더 건강하다. 급변하면 체한다.

4. 담임이 되면 기존과 차별화된 새로운 목회를 할 것이다. 현실: 차별화되고 새로운 것보다 성경적인 것이 중요하다. 시간이 지나면 해 아래 새것은 없다.

5. 담임이 되면 절대 부교역자들에게 꼰대 짓을 하지 않을 것이다. 현실: 어느 순간 자신도 꼰대가 되어 있지만, 본인만 모른다.

6. 담임이 되면 모두가 존경할만한 이상적인 목사가 될 것이다. 현실: 시간이 지날수록 끝까지 잘 버티고 은퇴만 잘하면 감지덕지다.

7. 담임이 되면 몸을 갈고 모든 것을 동원하여 무조건 부흥시킬 것이다. 현실: 그러다가 5년 안에 병에 걸리거나 공황장애 등 정신질환으로 사임할 수 있다.

8. 담임이 되면 모든 세대를 아우르는 목회를 할 것이다. 현실: 세대 간 갈등과 기대치의 차이가 크다. 모든 세대를 만족시키려는 시도는 균형을 깨뜨린다.

9. 담임이 되면 모든 성도가 더 성숙한 신앙생활을 할 것이다. 현실: 선임 목사님도 그러려고 최선을 다했다. 성도의 성숙은 성도 개개인의 의지와 하나님의 은혜에 달려 있다. 예수님을 담임 목사로, 나는 부사역자로 살아가는 겸손함이 지혜다.

9 Misconceptions Before Becoming a Senior Pastor

This piece was shared in a group called “Book Scent,” where we read and discuss two books every two weeks. It was intended as a reflection for pastors to evaluate themselves. Originally titled “Seven Misconceptions and Realities Before Becoming a Senior Pastor,” a few additional points were added through ChatGPT, and I edited overlapping parts to compile nine points.

1. The church will grow significantly when I become the senior pastor. Reality: Most churches either decline in numbers or maintain the status quo. The church you serve is likely one of them.

2. I will deliver outstanding sermons and lead a spiritually deep ministry. Reality: Many preachers are more skilled and spiritually deeper than I am. Preaching and ministry cannot be achieved by effort alone.

3. I will revolutionize church systems and administration. Reality: A healthy church should not be controlled by a single person, especially in finances. Rapid changes can cause disruptions.

4. I will lead a distinct and innovative ministry. Reality: What matters is being biblical, not unique. In the end, there is nothing new under the sun.

5. I will never act like an authoritarian toward associate pastors.

Reality: At some point, I might become authoritarian without realizing it.

6. I will be an ideal pastor, respected by everyone. Reality: Over time, simply enduring and retiring well is an accomplishment.

7. I will devote myself entirely to ensuring church growth. Reality: Such efforts often lead to burnout, illness, or mental health issues within five years.

8. I will cater to all generations—youth, adults, and seniors. Reality: The generational divide and differing expectations are larger than anticipated. Trying to please everyone disrupts balance.

9. I will lead all members to spiritual maturity. Reality: Previous pastors did not fail to try. Spiritual growth depends on individual willingness and God’s grace, not solely on the senior pastor’s efforts. True wisdom lies in living humbly, with Jesus as the Senior Pastor and myself as His assistant.
