새해에는 더 많은 VIP들을 예수님께 인도합시다.(2024.12.22)

교회와 관련해 자주 듣는 질문 중 하나는 “교회의 존재 목적이 무엇일까요?”입니다. 많은 분들이 교회는 예배를 위해 존재한다고 생각합니다. 존 파이퍼 목사를 비롯한 여러 복음주의자들도 선교의 궁극적인 목적은 예배 없는 곳에 교회를 세워 예배를 드리게 하는 것이라 말합니다. 이 말은 옳습니다. 그러나 저는 최영기 목사님의 정의가 교회의 목적을 더 잘 설명한다고 생각합니다. 교회는 영혼을 구원하고 제자를 삼기 위해 존재한다는 것입니다. 따라서 예배는 교회의 존재 목적이 아니라, 모든 그리스도인의 존재 목적입니다. 성도의 존재 이유가 예배라면, 성도의 모임인 교회의 존재 이유는 선교입니다.

지난 수년간 세례를 받은 분이 없는 해는 있었지만, 구원을 받은 분이 없던 적은 없었습니다. 그런데 올해는 유아세례를 제외하고는 세례자도, 구원받은 분도 없는 첫해였던 것 같습니다. 내년에는 예닮교회 모든 성도가 풍성한 열매를 맺기를 바랍니다. 우리의 내면에서는 예수님의 성품을 닮아가는 열매를, 외적으로는 VIP들을 교회로 인도하는 열매를 맺는 한 해가 되었으면 합니다.

그동안 목장마다 VIP가 있기에 크게 걱정하지 않았습니다. 제가 계속 담임목사로 섬긴다면 VIP들이 주님께 나올 기회를 놓치지 않도록 기도하며 기다릴 수 있을 거라 믿었습니다. 그러나 이제는 제가 VIPs를 기다리며 기도해드릴 시간이 많지 않습니다. 세상 사람들이 교회에 나오지 않는 이유는 언어의 장벽 때문만은 아닙니다. 언어가 통해도 나오지 않습니다. 기억할 것은 하나님께서 이끄시는 사람은 반드시 교회로 나온다는 사실입니다. 그러므로 적극적으로 목장과 교회로 초대해야 합니다.

최근 어떤 분이 제게 물었습니다. “이 목사님은 전도를 하지 않으세요?” 그분은 교회를 떠난 지 오래되었는데 제가 한 번도 자기더러 교회에 와보라고 하지 않더라는 것입니다. 물론 저는 수평이동을 기대하지 않기에 사시는 곳에 가까운 교회로 안내해 드렸습니다. 의외로 교회에 오라는 초대를 기다리는 분들도 있습니다. 새해에는 VIPs 명단을 최대한 많이 작성해 봅시다. 송구영신 예배 때 조금 일찍 오셔서 일 년 동안 구원받았으면 하시는 분들의 이름을 적고 함께 기도합시다. 내년에는 예닮교회 모든 성도가 VIPs들을 주님께 인도하는 기쁨을 풍성하게 누리길 소망합니다.

Let’s bring more VIPs to Jesus in the New Year.

One common question about the church is, “What is the purpose of the church?” Many people think that the church exists for worship. John Piper and other evangelical pastors also say that the goal of missions is to plant churches in places without worship, so worship can happen there. This is true. However, I believe Pastor Chai Young-gi’s definition explains the purpose of the church even better: The church exists to save souls and make disciples. Worship is not the purpose of the church but the purpose of every Christian. If worship is the reason for a believer’s life, then missions are the reason for the church’s existence.

Over the years, there were times when no one received baptism, but there was never a year when no one was saved. However, this year seems to be the first time that no one, apart from infant baptisms, received baptism or was saved. I hope that next year, every member of Yedalm Church will bear abundant fruit. Internally, we should grow in the character of Jesus, and externally, we should bring VIPs to church.

I wasn’t too worried because every small group had VIPs. I believed that as long as I continued serving as the senior pastor, there would be opportunities for VIPs to come to the Lord, and I prayed not to miss those moments. But now, I realize I don’t have much time left to wait and pray for them. People don’t come to church just because they don’t understand the language. Even those who do understand don’t always come. What we must remember is that God leads people to church. Our job is to actively invite VIPs to our small groups and church.

Recently, someone asked me, “Pastor Lee, don’t you evangelize?” They said they had been away from church for a long time, and I had never invited them to come. The truth is, I don’t encourage people to transfer from one church to another. Instead, I guide them to a church near where they live. However, some people are actually waiting to be invited to church. Let’s make a long list of VIPs in the New Year. Come early to the New Year’s Eve service, write down the names of people you hope will be saved, and pray for them together. I hope that next year, all members of Yedalm Church will experience the joy of leading VIPs to the Lord in abundance.
