그리스도인과 정치

한국이 정치적 아픔을 겪고 있습니다. 정치는 본래 바를 ‘정’에 다스릴 ‘치’의 합성어로 그 자체로는 ‘선한 것’입니다. 하지만 오늘날은 좌익과 우익이 극단적으로 양극화 됩니다. 물론 중도라고 자신을 규정하더라도 대개 어느 한쪽으로 편향되기 마련입니다. 좌파와 우파 정당 모두 국민과 나라를 위한다지만, 정작 일차적 목적은 자신들의 기득권을 지키려는 것처럼 보입니다. 리더가 무너지면 정당도 무너진다는 생각에서인지 문제가 많은 리더가 여전히 당의 수장입니다. 각 당의 주장들은 반드시 팩트 체크를 해야 하고, 팩트 체크조차도 다시 팩트 체크해야 할 우스운 상황입니다.

성도는 정치에 대해 어떤 자세를 가져야 할까요? 어떤 사람들은 “종교인은 정치에 참여하지 말고 종교에만 열심히 하라”며 정치에서 손을 떼라고 말합니다. 그러나 성도라면 교회와 국가를 양극화로 분열시키지 않는 선에서 반드시 정치에 참여해야 합니다. 이 땅에 발을 디디고 사는 이상 정치를 외면할 수는 없습니다. 정치에 관심을 가져야 바른 선거도 가능합니다. 신앙인들이 정치로부터 배제된다면 악인들이 그 자리를 차지합니다. 구약의 소선지서들 역시 정의, 곧 바른 정치를 외치고 있습니다.

문제는 성도가 자칫 좌로나 우로나 치우치기 쉽다는 것이죠. 생명의 구주이신 예수님을 말할 때는 냉정하던 사람이 정치 이야기는 거품을 물고 열정을 쏟습니다. 많은 이들이 자신의 판단을 믿지만, 실제로는 여론에 선동당하고 휘둘린다는 사실을 깨닫지 못하는 경우가 많습니다. 중도를 자처해도 극좌나 극우의 영향을 받을 가능성이 높습니다. 정당들은 자신의 단점은 외면하고, 상대의 단점만 부각합니다. 오직 자기만 옳습니다. 상대를 협력의 대상이 아니라 반드시 제거해야 할 적으로 규정하는 광풍 속에서 쏟아지는 정보들로 과연 중도를 지킬 수 있을까요?

성도는 이러한 정치적 양극화에 휩쓸려서는 안 됩니다. 쏟아지는 정보들에 성급히 결론을 내리지 말고 신중해야 합니다. 침묵 가운데 하나님의 말씀에 더욱 가까이 나아가야 합니다. 어떤 일에 대한 판단은 결과가 나오기까지 인내하며 지켜보는 것이 지혜입니다. 무엇이 진실인지 아직 밝혀지지 않은 상황에서 괜한 정쟁에 휩쓸려 오해받지 않는 것이 좋습니다. 세상이 어지러울수록 흔들리지 않는 나라를 상속받은 백성답게 변함없는 하나님의 말씀에 더욱 집중합시다. 완벽하지 않은 정치선동 위에 신앙을 세우지 말고 신실하고 견고한 하나님의 말씀 위에 신앙을 세우며 지켜봅시다.

Christians and Politics

Korea is experiencing pain in its political landscape. Politics originally comes from two Korean characters: “jeong” (right or just) and “chi” (govern), which together mean something inherently good. However, today politics is extremely polarized between the left and the right. Even those who call themselves centrists often lean toward one side. Both left-wing and right-wing parties claim to serve the nation and its people, but their primary goal seems to be protecting their own interests. They hold onto leaders with many problems, fearing that losing them might bring down the entire party. Every party’s claims must be fact-checked—sometimes even the fact-checking itself needs to be checked.

How should Christians approach politics? Some people say, “Religious people should stay out of politics and only focus on religion.” However, Christians must participate in politics, as long as it does not divide the church and the nation. As long as we live in this world, we cannot ignore politics. Taking an interest in politics is necessary for making good voting decisions. If people of faith avoid politics, evil people will take those positions. Even in the Old Testament, the minor prophets cried out for justice, which means fair and righteous governance.

The problem is that Christians can easily lean too far to one side, either to the left or the right. People who are calm and rational when talking about Jesus can become overly passionate and even aggressive when discussing politics. Many believe their opinions are right, but in reality, they may be influenced by biased news and public opinion without realizing it. Even self-proclaimed centrists are not free from the effects of extreme views. Political parties tend to ignore their own flaws while magnifying those of their opponents. They see themselves as entirely right and their opponents as enemies that must be eliminated. In such a climate, flooded with polarizing information, can anyone truly stay neutral?

Christians should not be swept away by this political polarization. We must be cautious and avoid jumping to conclusions too quickly. Instead, we should remain silent and draw closer to God’s Word. Judging matters wisely requires patience, waiting to see the outcomes. In times when the truth has not yet been revealed, it’s better to avoid unnecessary arguments and misunderstandings. As the world grows more chaotic, let us focus on God’s unchanging Word. Do not build your faith on imperfect political propaganda. Instead, build it on the faithful and solid Word of God and watch patiently.
