‘경외’라는 단어는 두려움과 사랑이 절묘하게 융합된 표현입니다. 구약에서는 히브리어로 ‘야래’, 신약에서는 헬라어로 ‘포보스’라는 단어가 사용됩니다. 영어로는 ‘두려움(Fear)’으로 번역되었지만, 이 두려움은 단순한 무서움과는 다릅니다. 하나님과의 관계에서 친근함을 유지하면서도 그분을 가볍게 여기지 않으며, 두려움 속에서도 숨김없이 나아가는 태도를 의미합니다. 요즘에는 이러한 ‘경외’의 태도를 찾아보기 어려워졌습니다. 어떤 분은 “오히려 귀신들이 하나님을 더 올바르게 두려워한다”고 말하기도 합니다.

최근 QT 본문은 역대기입니다. 흥미롭게도 반복되는 패턴이 보입니다. 하나님을 경외하는 사람은 형통하고, 하나님을 멸시하는 사람은 패망합니다. 하나님 앞에서 선하고 정직하게 행동한 왕들은 하나님의 보호를 받습니다. 반면, 자신의 지혜와 결정대로 살아간 사람들은 결국 우상숭배에 빠지게 됩니다. 역대기는 하나님을 경외하는 자세를 세 가지로 요약합니다. 첫째, 산당을 제거하고 우상숭배를 멀리합니다. 산당은 당시 경제 활동이 이루어지던 장소로, 이를 없애는 것은 경제적 어려움을 동반했을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님을 경외하는 왕들은 경제적 이익보다 하나님을 더 중요한 분으로 섬겼습니다. 둘째, 하나님을 온 마음으로 찾았습니다. 성경은 이를 “마음이 온전하였다”고 표현합니다. 보이지 않는 하나님을 어떻게 찾았을까요? 모든 도움은 여호와께로 온다고 믿고, 그분의 율법을 준수하며, 하나님 앞에 부르짖고 예배했습니다. 그러자 하나님께서 친히 싸우셔서 그들을 승리로 이끄셨습니다. 셋째, 하나님의 사람들을 가까이하였습니다. 스스로 모든 결정을 내리지 않고 하나님의 선지자에게 물으며, 성경은 이를 “여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행했다”고 표현합니다. 악한 사람들과 교제하지 않으며, 제사장, 레위인, 선지자들의 조언을 따랐습니다. 누구의 말을 듣느냐가 그들의 운명을 결정했습니다. 우상과 산당을 제거하고, 하나님의 율법을 준수하며, 하나님의 사람들을 가까이 하여 세상보다 하나님을 경외합시다.

We Fear the Lord.

The word ‘fear’ in this context is a profound fusion of both fear and love. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word is ‘yare’, and in the New Testament, the Greek word is ‘phobos’. Although it is translated into English as ‘fear’, it differs from mere terror. It speaks of a relationship with God where one maintains a sense of closeness without being irreverent, and where, despite fear, one can approach God without hiding anything. Nowadays, it is rare to see such an attitude of ‘fear of the Lord.’ Some even say, “It seems like demons have a more proper fear of God than people do.”

Recently, my QT passages have been from Chronicles. A fascinating pattern emerges: those who fear the Lord prosper, while those who despise Him face ruin. Kings who act righteously and faithfully before God receive His protection, whereas those who follow their own wisdom and decisions inevitably fall into idolatry. Chronicles summarizes the fear of God in three ways. First, they removed high places and avoided idolatry. The high places were places where economic activities were conducted at that time, and removing them would have caused economic difficulties. However, kings who feared God placed Him above economic benefits. Second, they sought the Lord with all their heart. The Bible describes this as having a “whole heart.” How did they seek the unseen God? They believed that all help came from the Lord, kept His law, cried out to Him, and worshiped Him. As a result, God Himself fought for them and granted them victory. Third, they stayed close to God’s people. They did not make decisions independently but consulted the prophets of God. The Bible refers to this as acting “righteously in the sight of the Lord.” They avoided associating with evil people and listened to the advice of priests, Levites, and prophets. Who you listen to determines your fate.

Let’s become a true believer, fearing God by removing idols and high places, keeping His law, and staying close to God’s people rather than following the ways of the world.
