찬양의 위험성과 유익함(2024.08.11)

눈치 채셨겠지만 저는 말씀사역자입니다. 찬양을 좋아하지만 인도에는 별 관심이 없습니다. 그런데도 찬양팀과 인연이 깊습니다. ANM 경배와 찬양(두란노에서 올네이션스로 명칭변경)을 시작으로 다양한 찬양사역단체에서 간사로 활동했던 경력 때문인지 찬양인도자로 25년 이상을 섬겼습니다. 그럼에도 말씀사역이 주 사역이었습니다. 매번 찬양 사역자가 방문하면 담임 목사님께 조언하여 그분이 섬길 기회를 드렸습니다. 하지만 2-3개월이 지나면 결국 다시 저에게 되돌아왔습니다. 이유를 요청하면 전문가라는 그분보다 제가 훨씬 낫다고 판단하셨답니다.

찬양팀으로 섬기는 것은 신앙생활에 매우 유익합니다. 하지만 유익한 만큼 자신을 바로 보지 못할 수도 있습니다. 2-3시간 전에 포르노를 보고서도 찬양인도를 할 수 있고, 술과 담배를 피우며 찬양 곡을 작곡하기도 합니다. 심지어 싱어들과 불륜스캔들에 빠지는 몇몇 리더들도 보았습니다. 영광의 보좌 앞에 드러나는 사역이다보니 따르는 사람도 많아 가면을 쓰기도 쉽습니다. 우러러보는 무대에 서다보니 스스로 뭔가 된 줄로 착각하기도 합니다. 리더뿐만 아니라 드러머와 악기연주자들 역시 본이 되지 않는 경우가 있습니다. 오죽하면 ‘고신’이라는 교단은 피아노 외에는 모든 악기들을 찬양에서 제외하는 초강수를 두었을까요. 어떤 목사님은 저에게 찬양팀 하는 청년들이 나중에 신앙생활 잘 하는 것을 거의 못 봤다며 분통을 터트립니다. 천상에서 찬양을 담당했던 루시엘이 타락하여 루시퍼가 되었음을 생각하면 일리가 있습니다.

찬양팀은 왜 있을까요? 신학적인 이유는 미루고 저는 찬양팀에게 기회를 주는 하나님의 섭리에 감사한 마음이 듭니다. 음악이 좋아서든 감정적으로 무아지경이 되는 것을 즐기던, 하나님께서 그 타락하기 쉬운 자리를 허락하신 이유가 있습니다. 자기위로와 자아도취와 자기를 높이기 쉬운 그 유혹의 자리를 지나쳐야만 비로소 진정으로 하나님을 경배하는 지성소로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 신앙생활에서 찬양은 또 하나의 선악과와 같습니다. 실패한 루시퍼와 달리 성도는 하나님만 높임으로써 승리합니다.

The Risks and Benefits of Praise.

As you may have noticed, I am a preacher. I enjoy praise but have little interest in leading it. Nevertheless, I have a deep connection with worship teams. Perhaps due to my experience as a staff member in various worship ministry organizations, starting with ANM Praise and Worship (now renamed to All Nations from Duranno), I have served as a worship leader for over 25 years. Despite this, preaching has been my primary ministry. Whenever a worship leader visited, I would advise the senior pastor to give them an opportunity to serve. However, after 2-3 months, the responsibility would eventually return to me. When asked for the reason, the senior pastor would say that he felt more reassured if I took on the team than the so-called experts.

Serving in a worship team is very beneficial for one’s faith. However, the benefits can come with the risk of not seeing oneself clearly. It is possible to lead worship even after watching pornography 2-3 hours earlier or while composing worship songs while drinking and smoking. I have even seen some leaders get involved in scandals with singers. Since it is a ministry that appears before the throne of glory, many people follow it, making it easy to wear a mask. Standing on a pedestal can lead to self-deception, thinking one has achieved something. Not only leaders but also drummers and instrumentalists can sometimes be poor role models. It is no wonder that the “Gosin” denomination took the extreme measure of excluding all instruments except the piano from worship. One of pastors has expressed frustration to me, saying that he rarely see young people in worship teams maintaining their faith well later on. Reflecting on how Lucifer, who was in charge of worship in heaven, fell to become Satan, there is some truth to this concern.

Why do worship teams exist? Setting aside theological reasons, I am grateful for God’s providence in giving worship teams opportunities. Whether one enjoys music or finds emotional ecstasy, there is a reason why God permits such a vulnerable position. Only by passing through the temptation of self-soothing, self-adoration, and self-elevation can one truly enter into the holy place of worshiping God. In the life of faith, praise is akin to another Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Unlike the fallen Lucifer, believers gain victory by exalting God alone.
