갈급한 사람 (최영기 목사)(2025.12.14)

아래는 휴스턴 서울교회 원로목사님인 최영기 목사님의 칼럼입니다. 개신교 비율이 줄어들고 있는 캐나다도 비슷한 흐름을 타고 있기에 결론도 비슷할 것이라 생각하며 나눕니다.

“한국 교회가 급속히 쇠락하고 있다는데 대해서는, 거의 모두가 동의하는 것 같습니다. 유럽처럼 교인 없이 건물만 남게 될지 모른다는 위기감도 팽배해 있습니다.

교회가 쇠락하는 이유에 관해 많은 분석이 이루어지고 있고, 이에 따른 여러 가지 해결책이 제시되고 있습니다. 그러나 한국 교회가 쇠락하고 있는 이유는 의외로 단순하지 않은가 싶습니다. 교인들이 먹고 살만 하게 되었기 때문입니다. 역사적으로, 빈곤한 지역에 복음이 들어가면 사람들이 마음을 열고 복음을 받아드립니다. 물질적으로, 영적으로 갈급하기 때문입니다. 그런데 복음에는 보통 물질적인 복이 뒤따릅니다. 그래서 예수를 믿게 되면 경제적인 여유도 생깁니다. 그러면서 영적 갈급함이 사라집니다. 뜨거웠던 신앙 생활이 형식적인 교회 생활로 변질됩니다. 이러한 형식적인 교회 생활이 자녀들 눈에는 매력적으로 보이지 않습니다. 그래서 이들이 교회를 떠나기 시작합니다. 이런 과정을 거치면서 교회는 서서히 쇠락해 갑니다.

교회 쇠락의 주 원인이 교인들에게서 갈급함이 사라졌기 때문이라는 진단이 맞다면, 처방이 쉽게 나옵니다. 갈급함이 있는 사람들로 교회를 채우는 것입니다. 우리 주위에는 갈급한 사람들이 많습니다. 주리고, 목마르고, 헐벗고, 병들었고, 감옥에 갇힌 사람들입니다(마태 25장). 결박 받고, 멍에 메고, 압제 받고, 굶주리고, 떠도는 사람들입니다( 이사야 58장). 이러한 사람들은 물질적으로, 정신적으로, 영적으로 갈급합니다. 이런 사람들을 교회로 초청하고, 섬기고, 예수님을 소개해야 합니다.

비신자 전도가 안 된다는 요즈음에도, 가정교회에서는 전도가 제법 이루어지고 있습니다. 갈급한 사람들에게 초점을 맞추었기 때문입니다. 교회에 도움이 될 사람을 찾지 않고, 교회의 도움을 필요로 하는 사람을 찾았습니다. 영적으로, 정신적으로, 경제적으로 갈급한 사람들을 찾아 목장에 초대하여 필요를 채워주고, 예수님을 소개했습니다.

일반 교회는 대부분 갈급함이 없는 사람들로 채워져 있습니다. 교회의 바향도 이들의 필요를 채우는데 초점이 맞춰져 있습니다. 이러한 갈급함이 없는 사람들을 데리고, 교회를 갱신시켜 쇠락을 막는다는 것은 불가능합니다. 계란으로 바위를 치는 것과 마찬가지입니다. 하나님의 사랑은, 힘 없고, 약하고, 고통받고, 신음하는 사람들에게로 흘러갑니다. 하나님의 아가페 사랑은 낮은 곳으로 흐르는 사랑이기 때문입니다. 이러한 갈급한 사람들로 교회를 채우고, 이들을 섬기고, 복음을 전할 때, 하나님께서 기뻐하시고 교회를 부흥시키셔서 쇠락에서 벗어나게 해 주실 것입니다.”

The Thirsty (Rev. Young-Gi Choi)

The following is a column written by Rev. Young-Gi Choi, Pastor Emeritus of Houston Seoul Church. Since Canada—where the proportion of Protestants is also declining—seems to be experiencing a similar trend, I believe the conclusion applies similarly, and I would like to share it here.

“Most people seem to agree that the Korean church is rapidly declining. There is a growing sense of crisis that, like Europe, we may soon be left with church buildings but no believers.

Many analyses have been offered regarding the reasons for the decline of the church, along with various proposed solutions. However, I wonder if the reason for the decline of the Korean church is actually quite simple: it is because Christians have become materially comfortable. Historically, when the gospel enters impoverished regions, people open their hearts and receive it. They are hungry—both materially and spiritually. But the gospel often brings material blessings. As people come to believe in Jesus, they begin to experience financial stability. As a result, their spiritual hunger fades. What was once a passionate life of faith slowly turns into a formal, ritualistic church life. To the next generation, such formal religious practice has no appeal. So they begin to leave the church. Through this process, the church gradually declines.

If the main reason for the church’s decline is indeed the loss of spiritual hunger among believers, then the prescription becomes clear: we must fill the church with people who are hungry. Around us are many who are thirsty and needy—those who are hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, or imprisoned (Matthew 25). Those who are bound, burdened, oppressed, starving, or wandering (Isaiah 58). These individuals are materially, emotionally, and spiritually thirsty. We must invite such people into the church, serve them, and introduce them to Jesus.

Although many churches today say that evangelism is no longer effective, house churches are still seeing people come to faith. This is because they focus on those who are spiritually hungry. Instead of looking for people who might be useful to the church, they look for people who need the help of the church. They find those who are spiritually, emotionally, or financially thirsty, invite them into their house church (small group), meet their needs, and introduce them to Jesus.

Most traditional churches today are filled with people who are not spiritually thirsty, and the church’s ministry tends to focus on meeting their needs. But trying to renew the church and stop its decline with a group of people who are not thirsty is impossible—like trying to break a rock with an egg. The love of God flows toward those who are powerless, weak, suffering, and groaning. God’s agape love always flows downward.

When we fill the church with those who are truly thirsty, serve them, and share the gospel with them, God will delight in this and will revive His church, lifting it out of decline.”
