선교사님을 위한 기도시간(2025.12.07)

어렸을 때부터 다녔던 모교회를 섬기던 한 목사님이 말레이시아 선교사로 떠나셨습니다. 몇년의 시간이 흐른 후에, 선교사님께서 말레이시아로 ‘선교여행’을 오라고 해주셔서, 몇분과 함께 다녀왔습니다.

‘단기선교’, ‘선교봉사’라는 말은 들어봤어도, ‘선교여행’은 처음이었습니다. 규모도 있지 않고, 준비하는 것도 없고, 무언가 해야 할 것 같은데 우리 팀은 아무런 준비가 없었습니다. ‘의미 없는 시간이 되지는 않을까?’ 하는 걱정도 마음 한 켠에 있었습니다. 

그리고 이름 그대로 ‘여행’을 다녀왔습니다. 선교사님의 사역 일정을 따라 원주민 마을들을 방문해 현장을 보고, 작은 일손이 되어주고, 현지인들과 예배드리고, 기도해주고, 관광하고, 맛있는 음식을 먹으며 선교사님의 팀과 교제하고, 꿈 같은 시간을 보냈습니다. 그리고 우리가 선교 현장에 끼친 영향은 미미해보였습니다. 선교사님께 멀리서 함께 하는 동지들이 있다는 유대감과 격려는 필요했겠지만요. 

그런데, 진짜 선교는 집으로 돌아오고나서부터 시작 되었습니다. 선교지에 대해 관심이 없던 저의 마음에 선교현장이 선명하게 그려졌습니다. 선교지를 위해 기도할 줄 몰랐는데, 기도하고 싶어졌습니다. 선교헌금을 보내는 것이 무슨 의미인가 몰랐는데, 값진 헌신으로 다가왔습니다. 현장을 보는 힘이 컸습니다. 선교여행을 통해 선교동역자를 만드시는 선교사님의 의도를 깨닫게 되었습니다.

지난 주에는 우리 교회에서 후원하고 있는 ‘삶이 있는 교회’를 개척하신 김보민 목사님께서 소식지를 보내주셨습니다. 소식지에는 가족들의 근황과 사역에 대한 목사님의 마음들이 절절히 쓰여 있었습니다. 비록 선교봉사를 가서 현장을 보거나, 돕거나, 함께 예배드릴 기회는 없었지만, 보내주신 편지로나마 현장을 더듬어볼 수 있었습니다. 그래서 더욱 마음이 담긴 기도를 드릴 수 있었습니다.

주일예배 합심기도 시간에 선교사님을 위한 기도제목을 추가했습니다. 그런데 상황과 현장을 모르면 마음이 가기가 쉽지 않습니다. 그래서 광고시간에 선교사님들의 상황과 기도제목을 나누면 합심기도할 때 더 진심으로 기도할 수 있지 않을까요? 하지만 선교편지가 항상 오는 것은 아니기에, 한달에 한번 정도 도착한 편지를 짧게 요약하여 공유하는 시간을 가져보려고 합니다. 다음 주인 12월 둘째주에 시작해보겠습니다.

Prayer Time for Missionaries (December 7, 2025)

A pastor who had served at my home church—the church I had attended since childhood—left to become a missionary in Malaysia. After several years, he invited me to come to Malaysia on what he called a “mission travel,” so I went with a few others.

I had heard of “short-term missions” and “mission service,” but “mission travel” was something completely new to me. It was not a large-scale trip, there was nothing to prepare, and although it felt like we should be doing something, our team had nothing planned. Part of me worried that it might end up being a meaningless time.

And in the end, we really did go on a travel. We followed the missionary’s ministry schedule, visited Indigenous villages, observed the field, helped with small tasks, worshiped and prayed with local people, toured the area, ate good food, and enjoyed fellowship with the missionary’s team. It felt like a dream. And the impact I made on the mission field seemed quite small. Perhaps what mattered more, if anything, was simply the encouragement that comes from knowing there are partners standing with you from afar.

However, the real mission actually began after I returned home. Even though I had never been interested in missions, the mission field became vividly imprinted on my heart. I did not know how to pray for missions before, but now I wanted to pray. I never understood what it meant to send mission offerings, but it now felt like a valuable act of devotion. Seeing the field in person had a powerful effect. Through this mission travel, I came to understand the missionary’s intention of forming mission partners.

In the update he sent, Pastor Bo-Min Kim, who planted Living Church—one of the ministries our church supports—shared heartfelt reflections about his family and his ministry. Although I have not yet had the opportunity to visit, serve, or worship alongside them in person, the letter allowed me to trace the contours of the mission field. And for that reason, I was able to pray with deeper sincerity.

Recently, we added prayer for missionaries to our united prayer time during the Sunday service. But it is often difficult for our hearts to be engaged when we do not know the situation or the field. So I wondered whether sharing brief updates and prayer requests from missionaries during the announcement time might help us pray more sincerely during United Prayer. Since mission letters do not arrive regularly, we plan to share a short summary once a month. We hope to begin next week, on the second Sunday of December.
