세례식에 관하여(2025.10.19)

이번 주일에는 세례식이 있습니다. 세례식과 그 순서에 대해서 짧게 안내를 드립니다. 

세례식의 의미는 우리가 생애주기마다 겪는 중요한 기념일들과 비견할 수 있습니다. 첫째로, 세례식은 생일파티입니다. 물은 더러운 것들을 씻어주지요. 물로 하는 세례는 예수님께서 우리 죄를 깨끗하게 씻어주셨음을 상징합니다. 뿐만 아니라 거룩한 하나님의 자녀로 새롭게 태어났음을 의미합니다. 그래서 같은 하나님의 자녀가 된 영적 가족들이 세례 받는 사람의 영적 탄생을(혹은 하나님의 자녀로 입양됨을) 기뻐하고 축하하는 시간이 세례식입니다. 

둘째로, 세례식은 결혼식입니다. 결혼식을 올리지 않아도, 남녀가 나라에 신고하고, 공인된 주례자 앞에서 서명만 하면 법적으로는 결혼으로 칩니다. 하지만 결혼식을 통해서 하나님과 여러 사람 앞에서 언약하고 결혼하였음을 공표합니다. 그처럼 우리가 개인적으로 예수 그리스도를 구주로 고백할 수도 있겠지만, 하나님과 여러 사람들 앞에서 공개적으로 예수님을 믿고 구주로 고백하게 되었다고 공표하는 시간이 세례식입니다. 사람들 앞에서 믿음을 고백하는 시간이기 때문에, 믿음의 결단이 요구 되고, 그러한 결단은 믿음을 더욱 단단하게 만들어줍니다. 또 공개적으로 하기 때문에 영적 가족들의 축복을 한껏 받을 수 있습니다.

셋째로, 세례식은 장례식입니다. 이번 세례식은 약식으로 머리에 물을 세번 뿌립니다. 하지만 성경에 나오는 세례는 강물에 푹 잠겼다가 나오는 것입니다. 물에 잠기는 것은 ‘죽음’을 의미합니다. 죄인인 나의 옛사람은 예수님께서 십자가에 죽으심과 같이 죽었다는 것을 선언하는 것입니다. 그래서 세례식은 옛사람의 장례식입니다. 그 후에 집례자가 물속에서 세례자를 끄집어 올려줍니다. 그것은 예수님께서 죽음에서 부활하신 것과 같이, 예수님을 믿는 자도 죽음을 이긴 부활의 생명을 가졌다는 것을 의미합니다. 그래서 세례식은 장례식이자 죽음으로부터 영원한 승리의 선포입니다.

세례식에는 문답 시간이 있습니다. ‘예수님과의 만남’ 시간에 알려드리고 함께 기도했던 내용을 바탕으로 질문이 구성되어 있습니다. 그 질문에 ‘네’ 혹은 ‘아멘’으로 응답해서, 세례 전에 신앙을 확인하고 고백하는 시간을 가집니다. 

그리고 축복하는 시간이 있습니다. 축복송을 부르며 앞으로 나와 축하해주고 기도해줍니다. 영적 생일파티이자 결혼식이니 마음과 정성 담아 한껏 축복하는 시간이 되길 소망합니다.

About the Baptism Service (October 19, 2025)

This Sunday, we will be having a baptism service. I would like to givea brief explanation of the meaning of baptism and parts of the service.

The meaning of baptism can be compared to some of the important milestones we experience throughout our lives.

First, baptism is like a birthday celebration.

Water washes away dirt. Likewise, baptism with water symbolizes that Jesus has washed away our sins. It also signifies that we have been born again as God’s holy children. Therefore, the baptism service is a time when our spiritual family—those who have become children of God together—rejoices and celebrates the spiritual birth (or adoption as God’s child) of the one being baptized.

Second, baptism is like a wedding ceremony.

Even without a wedding ceremony, a man and a woman become legally married when they register their marriage and sign before an authorized official. However, through the wedding ceremony, they make a covenant and publicly declare their marriage before God and witnesses.

In the same way, while one may personally confess faith in Jesus Christ as Lord, the baptism service is the moment to publicly declare before God and others that we believe in Jesus and confess Him as our Savior. Because it is a public confession of faith, it requires a decision of faith—and such a decision strengthens our faith. Moreover, since it is done before the community, the person being baptized receives abundant blessings from their spiritual family.

Third, baptism is like a funeral.

In this baptism service, water will be sprinkled on the head three times. However, in the Bible, baptism was performed by immersion—being completely submerged in water and then raised up again. Going down into the water symbolizes death. It declares that our old, sinful self has died, just as Jesus died on the cross. Therefore, baptism is a funeral for the old self.

When the officiant lifts the baptized person out of the water, it symbolizes that, just as Jesus rose from the dead, the believer now possesses the new life of resurrection that has overcome death. Thus, the baptism service is both a funeral and a proclamation of eternal victory over death.

There will also be a brief time of questions and answers. These questions are based on what we learned and prayed about during the “Meeting with Jesus” session. Candidates will answer “Yes” or “Amen” to affirm and confess their faith before baptism.

Finally, there will be a time of blessing. As we sing a song of blessing, we will come forward to celebrate and pray for the one being baptized.

May this baptism service truly be a time filled with heartfelt blessings—a spiritual birthday celebration and a wedding before God.
