주님의 기준(2025.05.25)

저는 여행을 갈 때, 대략적인 계획만 세우고 상황에 따라 움직이는 것을 좋아합니다. 한 번은 아내와 함께 여행을 갔는데, 숙소를 매일 당일 오후에 에어비앤비로 예약하며 지냈습니다. 저보다 훨씬 계획적인 아내에겐 그런 여행이 다소 힘들었을지도 모르겠습니다.

그렇다고 제가 전혀 계획을 세우지 않는 건 아닙니다. 다만 저는 가능한 한 많은 정보를 인식(“P”erceiving)할 때까지 결정을 미루는 편입니다. 그래서 새로운 정보가 들어오면 기존 계획을 바꾸는 것도 부담 없이 받아들입니다. 이런 성향 때문에 미리 구체적인 계획을 세우고 다른 사람과 공유하는 일을 어렵게 느낍니다. 변수가 많을수록 고민도 많아지기 때문입니다. 계획적인 사람이 되려면, 정보가 부족하거나 변수가 많아도 자신만의 [기준]을 세우고 판단(“J”udging)하며 밀고 나가야 하는데, 저는 그게 잘 되지 않습니다.

그래서 인생에 대해서도 거창한 목표나 대단한 비전을 가지고 있지 않습니다. 하나님께서 가라 하시는 곳에 가고, 하라 하시는 일을 하는 것, 그것이 제 삶의 목표이자 방식입니다. 사역을 할 때도 마찬가지입니다. 계획적이고 꼼꼼한 목회자들을 곁에서 보면, 그들이 세밀하고 구조적인 계획을 세워 멋진 사역들을 해내는 모습을 보며 늘 감탄하게 됩니다.

이번 주에도 다시 생각해보게 되었습니다. 우리 마라나타교회는 앞으로 어디로 가야 할까? 다음 한 주, 한 달, 그리고 1년 후, 5년, 10년을 바라보며 어떤 그림을 가지고 움직여야 할까? 무엇이 우리 교회가 성공했다고 말하는 기준일까? 많은 사람이 모이는 큰 교회가 되는 걸까? 도움을 필요로 하는 이웃을 돕는 교회일까? 밴쿠버 사회에서 칭찬받는 교회? 현대인들이 이해할 수 있는 상식적인 교회?

감사한 것은, 구체적인 계획에 대해서는 나중 일로 삼더라도, 계획을 세울 [기준]에 대해서만큼은 제 개인적인 기준이 필요하지 않다는 사실입니다. 교회의 주인은 사람이 아니라 예수님이시기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리는 예수님이 원하시는 교회가 되면 됩니다. 예수님은 앞으로 교회를 세워갈 제자들에게 명확한 방향을 주셨습니다. 영혼을 구원하고, 제자로 삼으라. 그 순간, 예수님이 원하시는 교회가 무엇인지 이미 정해졌습니다. 우리가 영혼을 구원하고 제자를 세운다면, 교회의 주인인 예수님을 기쁘시게 할 것이며, 교회의 모든 목적이 이루어질 것입니다.

이것이 바로 우리가 함께 걸어가야 할 길입니다. 각 가정교회(목장)가 함께 힘써야 할 목표이며, 우리가 하는 모든 사역과 활동의 기준이기도 합니다. 우리 마음을 모아 이 일을 바라보고, 한 걸음 한 걸음 함께 걸어가 봅시다. 그렇게 주인의 소원을 이루며 걷다 보니, 그 열매로 행복한 신앙생활이 이뤄지고, 우리의 삶이 변화 되었다고 함께 노래하는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다.

The Lord’s Standard

When I travel, I like to have only a rough plan and make decisions along the way.

One time, my wife and I went on a trip and booked our Airbnb each day in the afternoon. My wife is much more of a planner than I am, so that kind of trip might have been stressful for her.

That doesn’t mean I never make plans. I just prefer to wait until I’ve gathered as much information as possible before deciding. When new information comes in, I have no problem changing the plan. Because of this, I often find it hard to make detailed plans ahead of time and share them with others. The more variables there are, the more I hesitate. To be a more structured person, you have to make decisions and stick to them, even when information is lacking or things are uncertain. But I find that difficult because I tend to wait instead of setting a fixed standard early on.

That’s why I don’t have big goals or grand visions for my life. I just go where God sends me and do what He tells me to do. That’s my goal and my way of living.

It’s the same in ministry. When I see pastors who are good at planning and executing things in a structured way, I truly admire them.

This week, I asked myself again: Where should our Maranatha Church go from here? As we look ahead to the next week, next month, or even 1, 5, or 10 years, what direction should we follow? What defines a “successful” church? Is it having a large number of people? Being a church that helps those in need? Being praised in Vancouver society? Being a “reasonable” church that makes sense to modern people?

The good news is, even if I don’t have a detailed plan yet, I don’t need to come up with my own [standard] to make that plan. Because the church doesn’t belong to any one person—Jesus is the owner of the church. So we only need to become the church that Jesus desires. Jesus gave His disciples a clear direction: Save souls and make disciples. That moment, the purpose and direction of the church was already decided. If we save souls and raise disciples, we will please Jesus, the head of the church, and fulfill His purpose.

That’s the road we need to walk together. It’s the goal for every house church (mokjang), and the standard for everything we do in ministry. Let’s fix our eyes on this, and walk forward step by step, with one heart. As we follow the heart of our Lord, may we become a church that finds joy in doing His will, and sings together one day, “Our lives were changed, and our faith grew deeper through the fruit of this journey.”
