사도신경으로 신앙고백합시다(2025.05.18)

이번 주일부터 예배 시간에 사도신경으로 신앙을 고백하는 시간을 갖습니다.

사도신경은 초기 교회에서 세례자들의 신앙 고백을 돕기 위해 만들어졌습니다. 2–3세기에는 신앙의 핵심을 요약하고 있기에 이단 사상에 흔들리지 않도록 지켜주는 기준이 되었습니다.(지금도 사도신경을 거부하는 이단들이 여전히 존재합니다.) 이후 사도신경은 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 조금씩 수정되며 오늘날까지 전해져 왔습니다.

그래서 사도신경이라는 이름과는 달리 사도들이 직접 쓴 것은 아니고, 성경에 나오는 고백문도 아닙니다. 대신 사도신경은 성부, 성자, 성령 하나님의 순서에 따라 성경의 핵심 진리를 잘 요약하고 있어서, 흐려지는 신앙을 다잡고 믿음의 내용을 재확인하는 데 유용한 신앙의 유산입니다.

이번에 사도신경을 신앙고백으로 도입하며 세 가지를 고려했습니다.

첫째는 마음을 담아 고백하는 시간이 되도록 하는 것입니다. 매주 같은 긴 문장을 그대로 읽기만 하면 자칫 형식적이고 무의미한 암송처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다. 그래서 문답 형식을 도입해, 성부 하나님, 성자 하나님, 성령 하나님에 대한 고백을 순서대로 나누어 고백합니다. 기도하는 시간이 아니므로, 눈을 뜨고 마음을 담아 읽으시면 됩니다.

둘째는 한국어와 영어가 함께 조화를 이루는 신앙 고백이 되도록 하는 것입니다. 사도신경은 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 다양한 버전과 번역본이 생겼습니다. 그중에서 한국어 사도신경과 가장 유사한 영어 버전을 선택하여 사용하려 합니다.  

셋째는 경배와 찬양의 시간과 이어지도록 하는 것입니다. 경배와 찬양 시간에는 하나님을 향한 사랑과 감사를 ‘노래’에 담아 고백합니다. 이어서 우리의 믿음을 ‘사도신경’에 담아 고백합니다. 그래서 우리의 신앙고백이 하나님께 드리는 믿음의 고백이자 동시에 하나님께서 이루신 놀라운 일들을 기뻐하며 선포하는 또 하나의 찬양의 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.

Let us confess our faith through the Apostles’ Creed

Starting this Sunday, we will include a time of confessing our faith through the Apostles’ Creed during the worship service.

The Apostles’ Creed was created by the early church to help those being baptized express their faith. By the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it served as a summary of the core beliefs of the Christian faith, acting as a safeguard against heresies. (Even today, there are heretical groups that deny the Apostles’ Creed.) Over time, the Creed went through slight revisions and has been handed down to us in its present form.

Despite its name, the Apostles’ Creed was not written by the apostles themselves, nor is it a direct passage from the Bible. However, it faithfully summarizes the central truths of Scripture, following the order of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is a valuable confession of faith that helps us refocus our hearts and reaffirm what we believe.

As we introduce the Apostles’ Creed into our worship, we have considered three things:

First, we want this to be a time of heartfelt confession. If we simply repeat the same long statement every week, it could feel like a mere formality or rote memorization. So we have adopted a responsive format, dividing the confession into sections about God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Since this is not a prayer, we encourage you to keep your eyes open and read with a sincere heart.

Second, we want this to be a confession that harmonizes both Korean and English. Over time, many versions and translations of the Apostles’ Creed have developed. Among them, we have chosen the English version that is most similar to the Korean version.

Third, we want this confession to naturally connect with our time of praise and worship. In praise, we express our love and gratitude to God through song. Following that, we declare our faith through the Apostles’ Creed. In this way, we hope our confession becomes both an offering of faith to God and another form of joyful proclamation celebrating the great works of God.
