기도하는 목회자가 되렵니다(2025.04.13)

지난 이취임식을 통해 감사의 인사와 함께 3가지 담임목사로서의 다짐에 대해서 나누었습니다. 첫번째가 기도하는 목회자가 되겠다는 다짐이었습니다.

이 다짐은 저의 각오이면서 동시에 저의 소원이었습니다. 신학대학원 시절, 어떻게 하면 좋은 목회자가 될 수 있을까 궁금해서 선배 목사님들의 저서들을 읽어보고, 목회의 비결(?)에 대한 이야기도 여럿 들어보았습니다. 그랬더니 하루에 3시간을 기도했다는 이야기를 반복해서 접하게 되었습니다. 그래서 하루 3시간을 기도해야겠다는 생각이 뚜렷해질 즈음 진주에덴교회를 개척하신 저희 모친께서도 하루에 세시간 기도에 힘쓰셨다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그렇다고 그 당시에 해볼 엄두는 못내고, 언젠가 꼭 하루에 3시간 기도하는 목회자가 되어야지 하는 소원이 있었습니다.

휴스턴 서울교회 최영기 은퇴목사님께서도 3시간 기도를 하셨답니다. 그리고 그 시간은 오로지 중보기도하는데 시간을 썼다고 하셨습니다. 그래서 가정교회를 하는 많은 목사님들도 3시간 기도를 하고 계셨습니다. 저도 지난 교회에서 3시간 기도에 도전해보았습니다. 적어도 2시간 이상 했을 때 사역에 임하는 제가 변하는 것을 경험했습니다.

가정교회 하시는 선배 목사님들께서 중보할 사람이 많지 않을 때는 1시간으로도 충분하다고 조언해주셨습니다. 그래서 3시간 기도를 법으로 삼지는 않을 것 같습니다. 하지만 지금야말로 사명을 다 하는 동시에 3시간 기도의 소원도 이룰 가장 좋은 기회가 아닐까 하는 생각이 듭니다.

사무엘은 사역에서 은퇴하면서 기도를 쉬는 죄를 범하지 않겠다고 했습니다. 그 말은 영혼을 맡은 사람에게 중보기도는 사명이고, 기도를 쉰다면 직무유기라는 말이기도 합니다. 그래서 제가 먼저 기도하는 목회자가 되어보려고 합니다. 부탁드리는 것은 제가 기도하는 목회자가 될 수 있도록 기도제목을 알려주십시오.

주일에 나눠드리는 용지에 2025년 기도제목을 작성해서 제출해주시면 2025년 한해동안 기도제목을 놓고 기도하고 돌려드리겠습니다. 헌신카드를 작성해서 알려주시면 그 기도제목으로 일주일간 기도하겠습니다. 또 목장에서 목자님을 통해서도 알려주실 수 있습니다. 급한 것은 문자와 전화를 통해서도 알려주세요.

그렇게 중보기도의 기쁨을 누린 다음, 이 은혜를 함께 누릴 수 있도록 나누어드릴 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

I will become a pastor who prays

At the recent farewell and installation service for the senior pastor, I shared my gratitude and three commitments as I stepped into this new role. The first commitment was to become a praying pastor.

This promise is both my commitment and my deep desire. When I was in seminary, I wanted to learn how to be a good pastor. I read books by senior pastors and listened to their advice. Many of them said they prayed for three hours a day. Around that time, I also remembered that my mother, who started Jinju Eden Church, used to pray for three hours a day. I couldn’t imagine doing it then, but I made a wish in my heart—to one day become a pastor who prays three hours a day.

Pastor Young-Gi Choi from Houston Seoul Church, now retired, also prayed for three hours a day. He said he used all that time for intercessory prayer. Because of his example, many pastors in house church movement also pray for three hours a day. I also tried to pray like this in my former church. When I prayed for more than two hours, I experienced a real change in how I served.

Some senior pastors told me that when you don’t have many people to pray for, even one hour of prayer is enough. So I won’t treat three hours of prayer like a strict rule. But I believe now is the best time for me to both fulfill my calling and try to reach my dream of praying for three hours a day.

When the prophet Samuel retired from ministry, he said he would not commit the sin of stopping prayer. This means that for someone who is responsible for souls, intercessory prayer is a duty. Not praying is like neglecting that duty. So I want to be a pastor who prays first.

You can write your 2025 prayer request on the paper we give out on Lord’s day and submit it. I will pray for those requests all throughout 2025 and return them to you. If you fill out the commitment card(헌신카드), I will pray for your request for a whole week. You can also share requests through your small group(목장) to the leader(목자). And if something urgent comes up, feel free to send a text or call me.
