담임목사에게 여유를 확보해 주세요. (2025.03.30)

담임목사는 평생 두 가지 영역에서 성장해야 합니다. 우선은 교회론입니다. 건강한 교회론은 영적인 우선순위를 정하는 데에 필수 입니다. 다음으로 리더십입니다. 담임목사의 리더십은 교회의 방향과 속도를 결정합니다.

슬램덩크라는 만화에는 상양이라는 농구 팀에 감독 겸 에이스로 스몰 포워드를 맡는 김수겸이라는 선수가 나옵니다. 감독이 없는 팀의 감독 대행입니다. 북산에게 밀리기 시작하자 김수겸은 드디어 선수로 출전합니다. 하지만 결국 북산에게 패배합니다. 경기가 끝난 후 한 해설자는 만약 상양에 김수겸을 대신할 감독이 있었다면 결과가 달랐을 것이라 말합니다. 작가 이노우에 다케히코는 김수겸의 농구 실력보다 전문 감독의 부재가 패배의 원인이었음을 암시합니다.

제가 13년간 동사목사로 섬기면서 존중받았던 이유 중 하나는 보통 청년들처럼 주중 40시간을 함께 세상적인 일을 하면서도 수요예배, 금요철야, 토요 새벽기도, 주일 예배를 소홀히 하지 않았다는 점입니다. 지금에서야 고백하지만 결코 쉽지 않았습니다. 영적 깊이를 잘 깨닫지 못하는 분들은 담임목사가 독서와 기도와 설교 준비에 집중하는 것을 노는 줄로 착각합니다. 차라리 심방을 많이 하고 많은 모임을 소화하면 잘 한다고 생각합니다. 하지만 담임목사가 바쁜 것이 영적 건강의 척도가 될 수 없습니다. 영혼을 다루는 설교의 질이 더 중요합니다.

담임목사의 성경적 역할은 하나님 앞에 말씀과 기도로 잠잠하게 머무는 것입니다. 공동체를 향한 하나님의 음성을 듣습니다. 그래서 전적으로 여유로운 시간이 확보되어야 합니다. 책을 읽고 기도와 설교 준비를 위해 하나님 앞에서 머무는 것을 시간 낭비라고 생각하지 않았던 것처럼 김준기 목사님도 성도들을 하늘나라 에이스로 만들어 줄 좋은 감독으로 성장하도록 충분한 시간을 드리시기 바랍니다. 여러분보다 조금 늦게 이민 생활을 시작했으니 성도님들이 경험했던 아프고 상처 받는 일이 있을 겁니다. 그럴 때 위로해 주시고 격려해주시기 바랍니다. 성도님들이 목사님께 시간적 경제적 여유를 드린 만큼 목사님께서도 더욱 준비하고 성장하여 영적 유익을 성도님들께 되돌려 주실 것입니다.

Give the Senior Pastor Enough Time to Grow

A senior pastor must grow in two areas throughout life. First is ecclesiology. A healthy understanding of the church helps set the right spiritual priorities. Second is leadership. The senior pastor’s leadership determines the church’s direction and speed.

In the comic Slam Dunk, there is a basketball team called Sannoh. A player named Kim Soo-kyum is both the coach and the small forward, their key player. He is acting as the coach because the team does not have a real coach. When the team starts losing to Shohoku, Kim Soo-kyum finally joins the game as a player. However, they still lose in the end. After the game, a commentator says that if Sannoh had a real coach, the result might have been different. The author, Takehiko Inoue, suggests that the team lost not because of Kim Soo-kyum’s skills but because they lacked a proper coach.

For 13 years, I served as an associate pastor. One reason I was respected was that I worked a regular job for 40 hours a week like many young people, yet I never neglected Wednesday service, Friday night prayer, Saturday early morning prayer, or Sunday worship. Now, I can admit—it was not easy at all. Some people who do not fully understand spiritual depth think that if a senior pastor focuses on reading, praying, and preparing sermons, he is not working hard. They believe that a pastor is doing well only if he visits many people and attends many meetings. But being busy is not a measure of spiritual health. The quality of sermons that touch people’s souls is far more important.

The senior pastor’s biblical role is to remain still before God in prayer and the Word. He listens to God’s voice for the church. That is why he must have enough free time. Just as I never thought that reading books, praying, and preparing sermons was a waste of time, I hope that Pastor Kim Jun kee will also have enough time to grow into a great coach who helps church members become spiritual leaders. He started his immigrant life later than many of you, so he may have also experienced pain and hardships like you did. In those times, please encourage and comfort him. The more time and financial support you give him, the more he will prepare, grow, and give back spiritual blessings to you.
