Jesus called those of us who believe in Him “the light of the world.” He did not say, “Become light,” but already described the very identity of believers by saying, “You are the light.” This is a very important word of Scripture by which each of us must examine our own lives. Yet even such a passage has been reduced by the devil into a Confucian or moralistic slogan, turned into nothing more than a lofty, vague saying.
Put simply, it means that the atmosphere of my life, the relationships formed through that beautiful atmosphere of life, and the transformation of my values in the way I view the world all “become visible” through the flexible, set-apart service that is shaped by the help of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, a church where such light has gathered must possess a distinct character that can never blend in with the world. At the same time, wherever people who believe in Jesus gather, there will naturally be visible evidence of changed lives and the power of God at work among them.
Even if someone has attended church for a long time, if they use administration, meetings, and church constitutions as excuses for self-promotion, for preserving their petty pride, and for asserting themselves, then not only do they fail to understand what the existence of believers as the light of the world is supposed to look like, but they also become angry and attack others whenever something differs even slightly from the religious habits they have built up for themselves. That is why I have all the more intentionally tried to explain, through very practical examples from real life, how the church and the world are different, how believers and merely religious people are different, and what it means to be a people whose true nature is made visible.
For example, I have taught that the essence of the church is to save souls and make disciples, and that two visible evidences of that essence shining as light are these: (1) people continuing to be baptized, and (2) people committing themselves to serve as shepherds. No matter how much someone talks about what the church should be like, or what the law should or should not require, if there is no longing in that person’s life for the salvation of souls, and no willingness to devote themselves as a shepherd to care for souls, then that person may become excited in the conviction that he is right, but he is not the lamp on a stand or the city on a hill that Scripture presents as evidence. In other words, he is not the light of the world that the Bible speaks of. In fact, such a life becomes negative evidence—a mark of what is false—but even that becomes visible. You can tell just by looking. Anyone who believes in Jesus should have at least this level of spiritual discernment.
Another example would be this: it is important to appoint leaders in the church, but even more important is the spirituality and discernment of the community that appoints those leaders—that is, the congregation itself. I have emphasized that it is more important for the church to become a lamp on a stand and a city on a hill, so that it “naturally,” yet “distinctly from the world,” displays the atmosphere of a life of faith in Jesus before the world, especially in human relationships. For that reason, we gathered as a community through events such as all-church prayer meetings and all-church seminars, so that we could practice discerning such standards together and repeatedly share them with one another. At the same time, those who did not participate in such gatherings were also “made visible” in a natural way, as people who remained soaked in their own version of religious life—unchanged, rigid, making both themselves and others weary.
One of the blessings of House Church and House Church gatherings is precisely this: both the positive and the negative realities of a person’s faith life become visible. In particular, because the constitution of the American Presbyterian Church to which I belong was shaped by an American cultural mindset that often feels awkward to Korean people, Korean churches that argue over church law in meetings instead of praying inevitably face difficulty whenever they appoint church officers. Everyone says this is a problem, yet there has long been grief over the fact that it is not being solved. I have repeatedly emphasized that unless the community that elects church officers—the whole church—is spiritually upright, no matter what law is applied, the result will still be conflict, because people do not recognize the sinfulness by which they themselves have become the law.
At the same time, the church must appoint people through a gathering of believers who pray and who have discernment in the Word. I have tried to train our people with the standard that the fullness of the Holy Spirit is a mysterious privilege that can only be enjoyed through two means: the Word and prayer. If a person is truly filled with the Holy Spirit, then the fruit of the Spirit will appear in the atmosphere of that person’s life. Warmth, love, encouragement, and words of blessing will flow naturally. But if a person is not filled with the Holy Spirit, then all they see are problems, and the atmosphere of their life becomes filled with negativity, irritation, and a critical spirit. You can tell. If the church community is spiritually awake, everyone can see it. The crucial difference is whether the person himself recognizes it or not.
A soul ruled by the Holy Spirit gains the ability to look at himself objectively. This is objective evidence of enjoying God’s salvation. Because he has the ability to examine himself objectively according to the standard of the Word, there is repentance, gratitude, and change. But where there is no rule of the Holy Spirit, a person does not know what he is doing because he is governed by the self-made standards he learned from the world. Therefore, there is no change.
I am thankful that in our House Church, all the members of the community are being changed into believers who serve souls, who enjoy joyful and gracious fellowship in their relationships, who naturally have a spirit of obedience, and who understand well what kind of church pleases the Lord—so that with that discernment they are able to appoint leaders. The church must always learn again, must practice change (Re-Form), and through the community of House Church gatherings, the values of the Kingdom of God that the Holy Spirit makes visible must be seen clearly. This is because the church is a lamp on a stand and a city on a hill. This is not a slogan; it is an experience. It becomes visible on its own. We do not try to “put it on display.” If we pretend, it only becomes more embarrassing.
Congratulations on becoming a church that proclaims the grace of Jesus.
